    Strange artifacts on new windows/menus/icons

    Hey everyone!

I tried to search for a solution but it is quite difficult to put the problem into succinct words in order to find a solution.

When I open a large new window (especially firefox or Konquerer) the entire surface of the window is black with green little pixilated streaks through it (sometimes other colors as well) for about a second before it draws properly. This happens with pulldown menues occasionally as well. It is not all the time. It is a lot though. Very often. Also, occasionally when the system loads the icons in the lower right corner will have artifacts surrounding them. This lasts a bit and then seems to go away.

Any help eliminating this would be much appreciated. I am running Kubuntu 8.10 on a Macbook (4th generation, early 2008).

    Thanks!

I had this happen when I first installed .I thought it might be a graphics driver problem ,although I had the up to date 177 nvidia drivers that were recommended.lived with it for a while, shortly after I installed the 180 nvidia drivers and the problem was gone. Maybe its the same thing.
Check your drivers are up to date for your card.

      Thanks for the response!

I am very new to Linux and, embarrassingly enough, I don't know how to check if I have the latest drivers or how to get new ones if I don't..

I macbook from early 2008 so I am sure I could find out what kind of video it has (I know it is some kind of on-board thing, probably intel?).

      Thank you again!

        Hi
You should be able to see what you need by looking at :kmenu>applications>system>hardware drivers
You should be able to see which drivers are recommended for your graphics card. Highlight the recommended one and then activate , The drivers will download and install you will need to reboot.
You could also install something like Hal-device manager in Adept or Synaptic ,
Probably a good idea if that works to go into System settings>desktops and enable desktop effects...have a play around

        Hope this helps

I'm a new user and was perplexed until I saw this thread.

Reply #22 did the trick for me (assuming the issue you have is the same as I had -- certainly sounds like it)
