alternative to microsoft outlook2003

hi People
I wanted to know in kubuntu 8.10 weather their is an alternative to MS outlook 2003 because i have .pst file to be imported and i ve only linux OS I have heared of thunder bird and i have installed it and configured through gmail but i am unable to import the .pst file format in thunderbird.

You probably can't import .pst files directly. I don't use thunderbird, but at least Kontact/Kmail importer doesn't do .pst files (and it can handle quite a number of formats).

There is, however, a command line tool called 'readpst' (install package readpst) that should convert .pst files to mbox, which you can import to your mail client of choice. See the man page ('man readpst') for usage.

Kontact is the default PIM-suite in KDE/kubuntu, and Kmail is it's mail client, but you can of course use thunderbird if you prefer.

but will it work for MS outlook 2003 I have .pst file from 2003MS outlook 2003 because i see many bloggers telling that it does not work on 2003 version but works on the older version of MS outlook. correct me if im wrong

I really can't tell, since I've not used the utility myself...but it's entirely possible it doesn't support 2k3 versions (I think microsoft has changed the format every now and then)...It's still worth a go in my opinion, the bloggers might have used an older version of the utility or something.

I believe that TB can import a .pst file but only when it's running on Windows.

Do you still have access to Outlook because if you can expert the various components to say a csv file you might have more options. Alternatively if you have the opportunity to install TB on the windows machine that might just do it so far as mail is concerned.

If you check the home pages for kontact you will see that there are tools to help you import. The package "outport" claims to convert your calendar and contacts.

If you have only the .pst file you don't have too many options - you may find this a helpful read, though
