    Plasmoids not working

    HI -

    I'm on a 64bit install of Intrepid running KDE4

Since upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1 (and upwards) many, many, many of my plasmoids don't work. I get the following error message:

"The object could not be created for the following reason: Could not find requested component: whatever"
    I haven't downloaded and comipled any additional plasmoids so I don't think it's this issue - http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3100332.0

Even stock plasmoids line Picture Frame no longer work.

    Any ideas?

The package names for the default plasmoids has changed over time. I'm not on my kubuntu computer, but if you search the packages I'm guessing you have an older package installed which is now obsolete. Checking the version numbers is usually how I can tell which package is current...often the names aren't clear enough.

Maybe... but the Picture Frame was standard and there's no equivalent re-named kind. For what it's worth, its' Picture frame Version 1.0 using KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1))

If you are running KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1) would you mind letting me know whether it works on your system?

      Thanks!

I am having problems now that I upgraded to 4.2 (er..4.1.96) using the ppa-experimental repository. It doesn't list libplasma2 for the current release and using it from the 4.1.4 breaks most of kde. What's the deal? Does anyone else lose this package?
          Synaptic's repository reads (among others):

          http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu/

rmallis if you look in the packages it shows 4.2 is to use libplasma3
why are you trying to still use libplasma2?

If I try to install the plasmoid for weather, among others...
              E
              plasmoid-weather:
Depends: libplasma2 but it is not going to be installed

I also see no instance of libplasma3 when I do a search in synaptic for libplasma

Anyone else see this? Should I not have upgraded?

That is indication of a version problem eg: 4.1 vs 4.2
Meaning if you want to use that part you will have to downgrade to 4.1 or wait.

I would sit tight as 4.2 was publicly released today but has not populated in the experimental repos yet.

I am beginning to see this... I also do see the dependencies now for libplasma3, and I suspect it is installed, but somehow, searches in adept or synaptic aren't finding it... I will wait

                  Thanks

                    Re: Plasmoids not working

The owner of the weather plasmoid (ROG131) gave instructions for getting the weather plasmoid, among others working again by using his Jaunty version. If you do a search on search ROG131 , I think you will find it. Beware that one of his other plasmoids (Stockquote) crashed my kde after upgrading from RC to final. In all fairness, he warned me that there may be changes when 4.2 final came out that could cause an issue.

Just tried the weather plasmoid and crashed hard. "I Hate The Cashew" still works, not a clue why.

                        Re: Plasmoids not working

re libplasma3 v libplasma2 - I'm not at my pc but I'm pretty sure I have libplasma2 installed rather than libplasma3 which may explain this.

The reason I have libplasma2 installed is that if I go to libplasma3 then I lose digikam and digikam is far too useful to me to lose.

So in a choice between digikam and working plasmoids digikam wins.

                          Re: Plasmoids not working

You can solve that dilemma by adding this ppa to your repository list:
                          deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/digikam-exp...tal/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

This is the release candidate of the new digikam and works with libplasma3. It's nice.

                          Make sure you also have:
                          deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-exp...tal/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
