Media problem

Hi All
I am having a problem playing certain media with certain apps .
This is the second re install of Kubuntu KDE 4.2 RC . I installed OK previously and followed the multimedia guide over at the Ubuntu forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683 and everything worked fine .
This time followed the guide to the letter (done it loads of times ) and no errors.
The problems are varied ..Amarok will not ply MP3's VLC will not play mp3, it will play flv files it will open wmv but there is no audio. Gnome player plays everything so far .Dragon player will play DVD but not anything else.
Can some one please advise me what to do.

Well I just tried Exhaile and Banshee and they wont play either

Have you installed kubuntu-restricted-extras?

I don't see it listed in the link.

Yes I have .
Just out of curiosity I installed Suse KDE 4.2 and I'm having the exact same problem its wierd
Strange because my first install of Kubuntu KDE 4.2 all went well.

OK I tried some mp3's from another drive and Amarok and VLC work. Still dont understand why Gnome player could play the MP3'3 that VLC aand Amarok could not
