Automatic updates

Hi,

Prior to my update to 8.10, from time to time I would get an icon on the task bar which would indicate new software updates, but now I have to run adept updater, and manually update the package list to get the updates to appear (I mean I have no indication that there are available updates unless I do this manual process). Is there a way to setup things so they work as before ?

Because it isn't its a known bug.

Huh? That doesn't make sense. The Adept Notifier works just fine on my 8.10 installation.

I think sometimes the adept notifier crashes, and until you restart (or log out/in) you won't have it. Just a theory, although I don't use it anymore.

Because I don't get any notification of new updates available. I have to manually start adept updater and click on "fetch current package lists" to see that there are updates available.

Which is the process name I should look for to see if it is running ?

It's not an actual running process - it's a cron job (apt) located in /etc/cron.daily.

To find if update-notifier is running, hit Ctrl-Esc, and type update in the box.
I had a LOT of trouble with this, when I upgraded to KDE-4.2. Something in the install process breaks this, or at least it did for me. The cron jobs are there, and they apparently run, but I never got any notifications.
What I did:
sudo apt-get install update-notifier
Kicker>System Settings>Advanced>Autostart>Add Program
Add /usr/bin/update-notifier in the choose application box.
Now it works fine.

The main thing you have to look for is to make sure it is marked as executable.

That was it. For some reason /etc/cron.daily/apt did not have execute permissions. I have fixed it and it seems to be working now.
