stuttered sound

Yesterday I believe I saw the notion that there were new updates.
So I looked at it and it was mencoder and mplayer if I remember it right.
So I let it install.
This morning when I turned on my machine, the sound was horrible, stutters like crazy. So I suspect this is because the new install of mencoder and mplayer.
How can I return back to the old mencoder/mplayer?
