    AVI video files not playable

I have an AVI file that I thought VLC would play. VLC refuses to play saying it doesn't have the
codecs for it. The exact quote:

    No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "GEOX". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

I have tried several programs (Dragon, MPlayer and VLC) that are supposed to play
AVI (visual - not sound) but can't get it to work.
On the Windows side I can't find any media player (or the correct codecs) that will play the
AVI file except the media player installed with Vista. Go figure.
Any ideas for a Linux program that can play this AVI file?

maybe you have tried this but I would download the codec for windows and throw the dll into /usr/lib/codecs and see if that works.

It sounds an interesting experiment but do you know which dll's are used for Windows media player?

        About AVI

Avi is a container format > AVI wiki
There can be many kind of formats inside...

        About Geox

        Googling > GEOX codec
Geovision's CCTV MPEG-4 codec, which is also known as "GEOX" or "GEO-MPEG4 Codec".

How to install Geovision's CCTV MPEG-4 codec:...
        More googling > FourCC code - strh\GEOX
        Hi,

we have updated our website and so the link to the GEOX codec has changed.

If you go to our CCTV software downloads page, http://www.ezcctv.com/software-download.htm and scroll down to the bottom, you can download all the GeoVision Codecs.
I don't know if those codecs work with the Linux...

Do you have the Medibuntu repository in your sources.list? w32codecs or w64codecs might be needed.

          Try here:
          https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I believe it detects which one you need but search 'codecs' in the repository list as they are 'non-free.'. I used 'Synaptic' when I found them.

See if that helps (if you haven't done that yet).

I tried the medibuntu repository and installed the codecs but it didn't help. As this is a file from a specific source I am going to try and change the format of the file that is produced from this device. I thought it was an ordinary AVI file. Maybe by this workaround I'll be able to view this type of video.
