    GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

    Hi guys,
I've just installed Kubuntu 8.10 and everything works perfectly except for Open Office programs:
in fact when I open "Word processor" (for example), KDE starts to make graphic errors, like a blackout or the icon colours become their negative. Even if I restart the computer nothing changes. Another problem is that when I save a file using Open Office, if I save it using the left-hand button called "Desktop" the file will be saved under home/user and not under home/user/Desktop.

    can anybody help me?

    thanks in advance

Re: GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

I am afraid the graphic issue is just that, an issue. I don't think there is a solution yet with KDE4. KDE3.x users are not affected.

Your other problem - you are probably aware that the Desktop folder does not necessarily correspond to the desktop you see which is home to all the plasmoids. It is now just another folder. Have you enabled the folder view plasmoid for your dashboard? Set it to show the Desktop - that should take care of it

yes, I know about the new desktop configuration in KDE4 and I've already enabled the folder view plasmoid, probably it's a problem of Open Office with this new release ( I mean even the graphic issue ), have you got this problem?
maybe my graphic card isn't enough recent, I have an NVIDIA Geforce Go 7300 TurboCache...

      thanks

You are not the only one with the OpenOffice graphic issue - it affects EVERY KDE4 user regardless of distro. I am running ArchLinux and am experiencing the same problems (well, if you want to tall it a problem, that is...). Hang in tight and it will get sorted.

Ha, I should eat my hat!

Just fired up OOo3 on Arch and it looks dandy! Must have been last night's update. Hope the same applies to Kubuntu

Re: GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

From experience, I have found using Nvidia proprietary drives to be the biggest cause of OO graphics problems, using the OpenSource drivers almost always fixes it.

I experienced some problems refreshing icons/taskbar with OO2.4 on 8.10 64bit, but installing OO 3.0 actually looks like it fixed everything and now works fine.

                AMD64 with Nvidia card.

I downloaded the .debs from OpenOffice directly [for debian/ubuntu], extracted, and then dpkg -i *.deb and it all went fine.

                No problems since.

Re: GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

The graphics issue is solved with nvidia beta drivers 1.80, I am using 1.80.06 which can be found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...32_180.06.html
This is for 32bit you can search for 64bit.
They are not in the repo, so you have to download and install, the instructions are on the link.

And I should eat my hat again.

The issue was not resolved. I am using th 173 driver for my old GeForce5200 card.

Re: GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

I suggest it's still a kde 4 problem. So update your Nvidia and OO files all day long, it won't matter.

For the record, when my ver. 2.4 OpenOffice (I need to try v. 3.0) opens, I get a quick yet brief colour storm of the program but even though it is short-lived, it's still annoying to me.

It's not as bad as my KDE menu going crazy with colours sometimes. Sometimes, I can't even read what and where the program is and the bottom icons get washed out with the blue desktop in the form of 'blue' squares. Surely, others have this problem?

I am guessing the KDE developers have a huge bug in the way things can get printed onto the screen (i.e. the interaction with the KDE menu - it could be a combo of KDE and video graphics) and for whatever reason it happens. Of course, I know nothing about this so I am just speculating because that is how it appears to me.

Re: GRAPHIC PROBLEMS USING OPEN OFFICE

The cause of the "color storm" you mentioned when opening certain programs or menus has been discovered. I can't remember if it's been fixed, but I think so. So when 4.2 is released, or maybe earlier, that should be gone.

                            Any bets for KDE 4.3?

What video drivers, kde version, kernel are you running, I show mine in my sig. Thus I can say that if your video card is capable of running the nvidia 180 beta you should find that this problem stops. I also use Ooo 3 installed direct from Ooo debs, and unistalled Ooo 2.4 prior to this.
