Screen freeze

'm running Kubuntu 8.10 a couple of days now. And it occurs (apparently) completely random. When I'm just doing some stuff like browsing chatting and listening to some music. My screen freezes. Now comes the weird part, the music just keeps playing till the playlist is finished, I can still move my cursor, and that's it. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't work the same goes for ctrl+alt+backspace. And ctrl+alt+f1 for going to the terminal also does nothing. So far I know i have tried everything and it always comes down to a reboot. Does anyone know what it is and how to solve it?

Is this a laptop or a PC? some sort of spec would help (at the very least people would need a make/model of the machine or mother board).

Is is a USB keyboard or PS2.
What media player are you using.

If (when the machine has locked-up) you (briefly) press the power button (without holding it in) does the shut-down dialogue show.

Have you checked the system log files (/var/log) to see if there are any error messages or unknown hardware devices reported.

disclaimer: I've already forgotten more than I remember about Linux... so consider me knew

It sounds like a video problem. I would guess that opening Konsole actually works... you just can't see it because the video is stalled. X server issue maybe? Or could be your video drivers.

Do you have ATI or nVidia graphics? Have you enabled the "unfree" drivers?

It is a pc machine. I use an asrock mobo (not sure which model), amd 3000+, ati radeon x800. I use amarok.

About the log, I'm quite new to linux so I don't have a clue about which file(s) I need to look at in /var/log/

What do you mean with the unfree drivers?
