I've been trying to connect to remote systems running VNC. I see lots on how to get the server running on Kubuntu, but that's not what I want to do. I have the same problem in Ubuntu. When I try to connect to a VNC server running on another system (Windows computers), it connects and then disconnects spontaneously. I thought it was Krfb, but I tried running a web based VNC client through my work, and I got the same thing. Wine launched the viewer, it connected fine, then spontaneously disconnected immediately. Any one able to get a VNC viewer running in Ubuntu? It works fine in Freespire, so I'm thinking it's something with the default network settings in Ubuntu (even though Freespire uses Ubuntu as a base), but I've no idea where to start...

Re: VNC Viewer (Krfb)
If you are connecting to Windows machines try using RDP instead of VNC.
Either way the hosting machine will have to have it "enabled" or have the VNC server running. Assuming that is the case and you have access (IP addy, password, etc) you should be able to get on.
I have had better luck lately using RDP remotely to Winboxen. When I was using XP I would run tightVNC and had zero problems. Since switching to Kubuntu I use KRDC and have had no trouble with KRDC using RDP. VNC was a bit scketchy... but I didn't spend a lot of time trying to work out the bugs.

Re: VNC Viewer (Krfb)
I haven't tried RDP on my friends computers yet... they do have the VNC server running on their system. The problem is I remote for my job too, and HAVE to use the VNC protocol. I can always connect, but then the connection terminates from the host all on its own, and apparently it doesn't matter whether I use krfb or not. Anything that uses the VNC protocol does the same thing. I'm thinking a network setting somewhere, but I don't know where to start looking.

Re: VNC Viewer (Krfb)
I have successfully connected to a Windows PC using Krfb several times using Kubuntu Hardy Heron and Intrepid Ibex. I have not had the problem you decribed. My guess is that it's a network configuration issue. Either the network is kicking you off because it thinks you're an intruder, or it's unintentional. I got off easy because the office that has the Windows PC I was connecting to has a network admin, and I told him I wanted to use VNC and he configured it and gave me the IP address to use. My point is, if the network you are connecting to is adminstered, they can help you. If not, you will need to learn how, or find someone who can show you how to properly configure the network for this kind of access.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

Re: VNC Viewer (Krfb)
Thanks for the ideas. I don't think it's a network configuration issue. The work network is definitely configured for VNC to work, and I have had no problem using VNC to connect to the non-work computers via Windows XP or Freespire LINUX. The only time I encounter this problem is in Ubuntu AND Kubuntu Intrepid, and it's the same error for both. So it's got to be some default setting specific to Intrepid. Did you have to do anything special on your end to get it working, or was it an out of the box situation?

Re: VNC Viewer (Krfb)
I use No Machine NX for both a server and client. The server is running on Linspire (6.0.17) and the client is on Kubuntu 8.10. I had tried Krfb and VNC and found a number of connection issues with them. With NxMachine, I had absolutely no installation/setup issues. I was surprised at how easy it installed.
