Can anyone tell me whats going on with this message?

You know what they say about repeating the same behavior, while expecting different results .....

I'm not sure that Error Code 1 is a specific fault -- here's an example:

Were you doing a general update, or trying to install a particular package? What was the command that generated the commit failure?

Let's see trying to think back. I did an update . I have multiverse selected and I dled all these linux headers....it got brokey and i just let it ride for awhile...then I got tired of getting errors installing packages.


I'm trying to remember maybe i had to do a hard reboot during an update. Kub doesnt like those too muc

Having multiverse as a repo should not cause problems like that, however, the error does look like a problem related to sources or the dpkg database, so it's possible. When you do your 20 millionth installation, make sure you set your location and timezone correctly -- that points your system to the nearest repository mirrors.

Also, the first update after you install your system is probably the biggest you'll ever have, so you can plan to do something else for awhile during that one. It's a bad thing to interrupt an update -- you should avoid that at all costs. After that one, they're much briefer.

Don't EVER do a hard reboot -- it really should not be necessary (OK, I did it once or twice). Seriously, 99 out of 100 times that you think it's "frozen", it really isn't. Hold down Alt and SysRQ keys, and while holding them down, press slowly, in sequence R, S, E, I, U, and B. You will be amazed to observe the system shut down and restart. And it won't break stuff in the process, if you do it this way.
