Firefox (GTK) strange font problem (NVIDIA)

Hi

I've recently upgraded to kubuntu 8.10.
Now I have problem with fonts in Firefox. They look like this: http://i41.tinypic.com/178x04.jpg
Sometimes it's enough to move a mouse or window, sometimes I need to select a text and the problem goes away. Sometimes it does not.
I've tried hundreds of different font setting and schemes but without success.
I'm using NVidia drivers (GF 4200, 96.43.09-0ubuntu1).
Anyone having similar problems?

I'm no driver expert, but it seems you have very old nvidia drivers. Can you search with Adept for newer ones?

And if you're adventurous you could install the latest beta drivers which many people have had success with. Here's a forum post about how to install them. http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3100269.0

Actually, I think the 96.xx series is the latest proprietary driver that will run that card, unfortunately.

I said "unfortunately" because the X.org version in Kubuntu 8.10 is not compatible with it. See the release notes, regarding Nvidia legacy drivers:

Try the "nv" driver, and see if you get better results. No 3D for you, I'm afraid.

i can infact vouch for the issue that you are having and indeed say its the "Nvidia" driver..
check this thread i started about a similar problem and although i didn't put it in there firefox and a bunch of other apps were affected by this issue.

Fixed in NVidia beta drivers 96.43.10 (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?t=126954).
Fonts look OK!
