Had trouble with new kernel and Kubuntu install. Tried to shutdown system, but it wouldn't. When it restarted it ran FSCK by itself, basically. Had many open nodes (I think it said). Would not locate /home in newest kernel ( this is the kernel update from adept updates, I have not updated to any unsupported kernel) when I finally got X restarted. This time chose original kernel (.27, I think), but, did not come up as root user, but it booted. When I went to change to root in konsole, would not let me log in with password, said authenticate failure. So I decided to try to change my password, I typed in my old one to see what would happen. It said the password is the same, but I still can't log in as root with it. 
Question is, what the heck happened to my install? I like this distro, but have had some trouble and used only supported updates. And I am getting frustrated. >
