Location of KDE Panel Icons

Each day I get more frustrated with KDE4. On my own PC I have changed to gnome, but my partner perseveres. She also gets ever more frustrated, howeverl. I then get subjected to her venom . So I am posting this to get me out of the dog house:

The latest disaster is the panel. Somehow the locations of the widget icons have re-arranged themselves. They seem to do this with regularity. Currently the application menu starter has moved to the extreme right, the other icons are on the left.

Try as I might I can see no way to move or re-arrange the position of the icons. Does anyone know how?

    Thanks

Which version of KDE4 are you using...in the newer versions you can drag the applets around in the panel when the 'panel settings bar' is open.

Using the latest, ie whatever the update provides.

However, we cannot drag the icons. Moving the mouse pointer over a widget icon and clicking right or left only brings up a menu, with no MOVE option. The icons cannot be dragged AFAIK there is no LOCK on the panel or icons.

      Thanks

Re: Location of KDE Panel Icons

It's hard to tell you what to do if we don't know the version of KDE, since it's in heavy development and changes very fast...

        I'll try to answer anyway:

When you right-click on a widget icon in the panel there should be one option called "control panel options" (hope it's really called this way, since I'm using a german version). There you can find an option called "control panel settings".

If you activate this one, the panel settings will pop up above the panel. And when you move the mouse pointer above a widget, the cursor will change to arrows in all 4 directions. Now you can move the widget.

        Regards,

        rpw

This used to happen in previous versions of KDE 4 but is now pretty solid in 4.1.3. If you run Adept and look at Help>About KDE what version number is reported?

As I wrote, I am using the latest. That's 4.1.3 AFAIK.

            Thanks. That worked.

And if other issues are bothering you as well, it may be worth it to install kde 4.2 beta 1 (the 2nd beta was just tagged as well, so should be coming very soon). For me, it's far more polished than 4.1.3, with a few exceptions.

The issue (sorry, I'm about to rant and go OT again ) for me is that they removed some of the things that I found so useful in KDE3 AND turned it into a resource hog. Anyway, as I said, I don't use KDE anymore but my wife does.

And why is it so difficult (impossible in my case) to install service menus into Konqueror?

I will reiterate what many have said before that KDE 4 is a work in progress. It is just amazing that from the initial release of 4.0 in January how much it has progressed till now. Look how long Vista took to evolve from XP and how long it will take before Windows 7 is released.

Re: Location of KDE Panel Icons

I think the answer should be quite simple. (It's the same for 4.2 beta as for 4.1.3)

Right click on panel and unlock widgets

Right click again and Choose panel options/panel settings

A Bar will then appear over the panel, but if you then move the mouse over the panel you will see a cross-hair. Click and drag panel icons to their desired position and then (importantly) right click and then select lock widgets. If you don't do this final bit you can wind up with things all over the place.

                      HTH

yep! you beat me to it! It should be easy to change the positions with this arrangement...also, to find the version of KDE (just to verify), in konsole, enter:
                        Code:
                        kde4-config -v
                        Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop
Intel T9300 Core2Duo Processor @ 2.5Ghz
4 GB Ram | 1920 X 1200 Resolution
2 X 160 GB SATA HD Internal
Nvidia GeForce 8600M Graphics Adapter
Using Kubuntu 9.10

If that's the case, why stick it into something (Kubuntu 8.10) that is being presented as being better and stable??

Most people consider that KDE 4.2 will be the official release, that comes out in January.

.... so one should question what 4.1.x is doing in (K)ubuntu 8.10. Sounds more like a trick M$ would pull. And don't we like to tear strips of them when they go to market too early

Anyway, I installed 4.2 beta today. Much better behaved, IMO, although it locked up solid once. None of the resource hog issues, so far.

                              Cheers
