    Install KDE3

    Good day
Is it possible to install KDE3 on Ibex - either remove 4 or install 3 and use that as my default desktop.
My machine that is running Kubuntu, is just too old and really struggles with Kde4

    Thanks
    Andrew

Can be done - but why spring backwards through loops? Wouldn't it be easier to stick to 8.04 LTS? Whatever, this thread might be of use to you

Good question. I'd switch in an instant if it could be done.

      Cheers

GUIGuy, if you followed that link I gave you could do - it is a how to.

I still fail to see the logic of installing 8.10 and going back to KDE3 however. Install 8.04 and be happy.

Okay then - I ask - is it possible to downgrade back to 8.04.
I used the adept upgrade to get to 8.10

          Thanks

Oops - that is of course more difficult if not impossible afaik

I've got an idea but would not be willing to try it myself

            Couple of questions:

            1) have you got a separate home partition?
            2) have you installed a lot of additional software/made considerable changes to the original OS?

              Re: Install KDE3

Hoo boy - back when I was a Fedora Junkie - I used to manually partition everything - then I tried Kubuntu and got lazy - so I doubt I have a seperate partition. I think the last time I installed - I just put the disk in and said make it so.

As far as software - not really - it is a basic setup - nothing to tweaked out - I could probably reinstall it if I had to - but as it is now ski season - I won't be giving up my weekends to sitting inside getting a monitor tan when I could be outside chasing snow bunnies.

Hehe... Can't blame you on that front 8)

However, if you've done an upgrade you should still have all the old config files like your xorg.conf for example. Your ~/.kde is probably shot, have a look whether there is a backup version. If so, a new install with all the previous settings should be easy. Stuff like Firefox (bookmarks, add-ons, profiles, history, etc.), OOo et al can be sorted anyway.

                Did/do you have compiz?

I'd upgraded my wife's PC to 8.10. She liked KDE3.x but KDE4.1.x has been nothing but frustration for her. I've ranted elsewhere here about the problems we have had, so I won't bore you again.

I'd toyed with the idea of taking her PC back to 8.04, but as I understand it it would be an install from scratch. In any case, 8.10 has support for her printer and some other things that weren't there on 8.04. So Ubuntu 8.10 makes more sense.

At the moment I'm trying to convince her to accept a different desktop. No joy there so far .

                    Cheers

Yeah - I might end up reverting to Gnome.
My printer is also a pain in the butt, but it works in 8.10

Sound and a Canon inkjet printer in our case. Didn't work in 8.04.

                          All good now.

If she is cursing and cussing about KDE 4.1 I reckon you should introduce her to 4.2. Very slick, no hitches on my laptop, top draw.

And if you bork it (unlikely) then there is gnome to fall back on

I installed it several hours ago on my desktop. All good. Had one lockup and had to push the reset button. However, none of the resource hog problems so far. Will probably install it on Her's tomorrow.
