Just downloaded the updated version of Amarok from the repositories, can anybody tell me how to make it work? I used the older version extensively but the new version steadfastly refuses to see any of my CDs.

I have reverted back to the old version which works fine, I would still like to know why the new version doesn't seem to work, at least for me.

I will go further and say that the old version looks better than the new, apart from the fact that it also works.

Re: Amarok 2,0
According to the amarok forums, CD playback is not yet implemented:
http://amarok.kde.org/forum/index.ph...c,16068.0.html
Unfortunately, Amarok seems similar to kde 4.0 in that it got tons of hype and yet won't actually deliver the goods for a few more releases. I'm sure that in a year or so it will be much loved...but until then we have to endure the growing pains.

Hmm, seeing that it's supposed to be a music player that seems to be a serious drawback.

Actually I think that really stinks, would it have killed the developers to have added a note to that effect. Also why is it in the repositories if it can't even perform arguably its primary function?

Re: Amarok 2,0
I see this as a Kubuntu problem, 8.10 does not mount audio CD's which it should. It should not rely on the application to mount, which is why amarok 2 cannot play a cd as this version does not mount the CD.
If you insert a dvd it will mount, if you insert a flash drive it will mount, this should be sorted out by Kubuntu, an audio CD should mount. I cannot understand why any distro should think that a particular data source should not be mounted. There has been plenty said about this before and it's about time something was done about it.
Apart from that little rant, I actually like amarok 2.Kubuntu 10.10 64bit<br />KDE 4.5.3<br />Kernel: 2.6.35.22 generic<br />Nvidia Driver: 260.19.06<br />Dell Dimension 9200 - Core 2 Duo 6300 - 3GB Ram<br />Nvidia Geforce 7900GS<br /><br />Linux user since March 2004<br />Linux user #526793

Re: Amarok 2,0
Well, I wouldn't argue with you. It seems a fairly basic function of a music player. Many people have ripped their CD collections, though. I actually have never tried to play a music CD on my computer recently.
Fortunately, there are alternative programs out there, and the CD capabilities will find their way back relatively, soon, I'd imagine.

Re: Amarok 2,0
I assume 1.4 and 2.0 can co-exist on the same PC?
Not that I'm really bothered, once I've made my mind up to upgrade I rarely go back, besides I don't use Amarok to play CDs or sync to my media player so I think it will be fine for my requirements.
Time to move on, change is good...Kubuntu 20.04(AMD64)/KDE 5

Re: Amarok 2,0
I agree that Amarok 2 is really bland looking.
Have you seen this mockup? http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...?content=94472
I don't think it's going to take too long before some nice themes are released.

Re: Amarok 2,0
IANAP, but HTH do you call it a 2.0 release and it doesn't play CD's? I agree that I very rarely use this, but that seems a little weak. I agree that the mockups are pretty neat. I am currently playing with linuxmint and their KDE distribution has not updated to KDE4 yet (and that is good).

Re: Amarok 2,0
Well, the 2.0 number can be misleading. Amarok was actually rewritten from scratch with new technologies (like Plasma) in mind. As a result, many features aren't completed. However, by the time it gets to the equivalent stage as its predecessor, Amarok 1.4, it should be leaps and bounds better....blah blah.
The important part is what comes after the decimal...the zero.
Fortunately, as with all things linux, if you don't like you don't have to use it.
