    (solved) 2 small questions

I need a "howto" on configuring my keyboard.
    1. Alt-F2 doesn't open up "run" - how do I change that? Noting happens.
    2. Right-click (and left-click which is correct for me) on a program opens up the program but I want it to show me a list of possibilities. This is a useful attribute from my windows days. Can it be configured on Kubuntu? I'm sure it can.

Can you run the Krunner from the konsole ? Start the konsole and type a command:
    Code:
    krunner
Do you get the Krunner pop-up or do you get an error message ?

With the file manager (Dolphin/Konqueror) ? Or do you mean with the Kickoff/Lancelot ?

With the file manager: left click launches a program, right click there should be Service Menu(s)
    Attached Files

      Yes. Krunner pops up.

The problem is within Kickoff. Within Dolphin I get the correct list. It is when I right-click on a program in Kickoff that it opens the program and doesn't open a lost.
Thanks for pointing me in the specific correct directions - now where do I go?

Are the other shortcuts working ?
        Alt + F1 -> Kickoff
        Ctrl + F12 -> Dashboard /1/

        The problem is within Kickoff.
Hmm - here right click is showing:
        - Add to Favorites / Remove From Favorites
        - Add to Desktop
        - Add to Panel

Plasma's dashboard view replaces the old "Show Desktop" feature. Enabling the dashboard hides all windows and puts the widgets in front of them. Press CONTROL+F12 to show the dashboard view, for a quick glance at your plasmoids, read the desktop notes, check for new RSS feeds, have a look at the current weather situation, all that can be done with Plasma.

My widgets are hidden under the windows. How can I show them?

You can bring all the widgets to the front by pushing Ctrl-F12, which will bring the Plasma Dashboard to the front.

No. None of the shortcuts work.

My right-click (and left-click) start the partular program chosen. No menu.
I installed Lancelot to see what would happen. There when right-clicking it doesn't open the program but only gives me the option of"add to favorites.
          Still confused.

Are you running Emerald ? I noticed that when you run Emerald you lose all your keyboard shortcuts for some reason.

                Re: 2 small questions

Do any of your function keys (F1, etc.) work at all for anything? I know on my keyboard I have a key that toggles the F-keys on or off. Maybe they're turned off?

Interestingly enough, Alt+F1 does nothing on my system either, even though I can see in the System Settings that it is assigned. Most other shortcuts do work for me, though.

None of the F keys do anything. Neither with Alt nor without. They seem to be inoperative. Where can I go from here?

                    Re: 2 small questions

Here are a couple of notions that may or may not be relevant:

Is there a key in the upper right area of your keyboard, that toggles the Function keys on and off? On mine (a Microsoft "comfort curve"), sometimes Linux comes up with the F keys turned off, and I need to hit that key once to turn them on.

KVM switches and USB hubs are notorious for screwing up keyboard functions. If you're using one of those, try plugging the keyboard directly into your computer, start the X server, and see if things are different.

I think the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" script still allows you to reconfigure the keyboard, but I'm not positive on that. If it does, you might want to try one of the other keyboard layout choices.

Since you posted under 8.10, if you boot "Recovery Console", there is a new character-mode menu of recovery options -- the one called "Fix X" might give you the options that were previously available in the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg script.

I hope there's something useful in here somewhere ....

                      Re: 2 small questions

dibl you are a GENIUS!! There is that toggle key on my keyboard. It is called "flock". To ket the F keys to work with Linux one has to fpress the toggle key to "on" i.e. the light marked "F" is lit.
Thank you all for your efforts and dibl for the solution.
There still is the "right-click" issue (2nd question) but that is minor compared to the F-key one.
