Kubuntu logs out and says "checking battery status - OK"

    Hi all,

I've tried toying with linux for years and living on Windows XP haven't found anything user-friendly enough to get into. Learning linux takes time I don't seem to have until now; Kubuntu found my ethernet card and wireless card, something Mandriva can't claim, and day 1 I'm really enjoying the experience. So just a heads up that while I know what a terminal is doesn't mean I understand much about it.

My question is that I can't seem to use Kubuntu for more than a few minutes at a time, because the screen goes black with a "checking battery status - OK" message appearing and then goes back to the login screen, and of course nothing from the session is saved. I've browsed threads from others having this issue and either no resolution was given or suggestions came in a very non-newbie format leaving us who are trying to learn linux in a haze. Has anyone else experienced this here? There is no pattern to this happening except for using the system. I can leave it turned on/logged in for hours and do nothing, but as soon as you start opening programs and using files it kills itself. No specific program or files seems to cause it. This is basically Kubuntu 8.10 out of the box as I haven't added anything except FireFox and Pidgin and have changed no configuration settings yet.

If we can get this fixed I think I'll really enjoy Kubuntu and will find it easy enough to figure out that I don't have to go Vista. Please help. Please save me from Vista.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Laptop or desktop PC? Please tell us about your hardware.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

*slaps forehead* I guess that would help, huh?

It's a Laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m to be exact). I googled on how to best find hardware specs and - imagine that - a ubuntu page came up talking about "lshw". So I ran that and it's a lot of info, probably overkill, but I'll give it.

Re: Kubuntu logs out and says "checking battery status - OK"

I also have the same problem. In my case it seems to be caused by Amarok. I have posted a question here...

          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3100056.0

about it. In my case it is on my eleven year-old daughter's AMD-based Compaq Presario V2000 laptop.

Please help or make any relevant suggestions you may think of for me to try to isolate the issue.

          Thanks!

Well, I pulled a Typical Windows User. I thought "Hey, maybe somebody else has had this problem and it's already been fixed in an update." So I downloaded the 123 recommended updates with Adept, and we'll see if there's a difference - but I'm not holding my breath.

I already ran all the updates and her system is current. Same thing.

                This is reported at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/301601

Apparently it's a new bug and there's no solution yet.

I got the "checking battery status" on boot up after upgrading!

The message just flashed over and over.
I pressed Alt + F2 to get a command prompt

Copied an older *.xorg.conf file over xorg.conf file

That seems to have worked although it took a few goes to get a file that worked (the backup version didn't..)

I haven't tried to get my nVidia cards working yet and am a bit reluctant to.

So far 8.10 + KDE4 seems bit of a train wreck. Still can't get my wifi to work. Where's Kwifimanager gone? Why change something that worked? Mini rant over.

Have you tried disabling the battery monitor, or at least telling it not to do anything?
                    System Settings->Advanced->Power Management->Generel Settings
Then select Advanced Battery Settings at the bottom.
In When battery remaining is critical there is a "Do Nothing" option. I have not had this problem so can not test this possible solution but it looks worth trying.
