A friend of mine installed Intrepid Ibex on his wife's machine but he says that the text in drop down menus in various apps such as Firefox isn't visible unless you mouseover and then the text appears only briefly, has anyone else seen this problem?

do you know what theme is he using on such applications? does this happen only on non-KDE apps? assuming so there's plenty of literature on the forum regarding that problem...

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be
a video driver/font issue and I ended up changing
the font I was using. It started when I started
using the 96.43.09 nvidia driver.

He is using an Intel graphics card and it only happens with non system apps such as FIrefox, Opera etc.Originally posted by tomp01

I had the same problem with the menu bar text... and the drop-down text... all I saw was the undescore (dash-line). My environment is as follows:
CPU: Intel Pentium/4 2.4Ghz
Video Graphic Adapter: Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400
Monitor: ViewSonic VX2435wm (1920x1200)
Nvidia Driver: Linux-x86-96.43.09
OS: Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
In order to resolve the problem, I had to...
System-Settings --> Desktop-Effects --> General-Tab
... then un-check "Enable desktop effects"
... then Apply
I am not entirely sure what the "Desktop Effects" were actually giving me !?!
