Actually, I had to delete the last two lines before I was OK again.

Thanks everyone for being so very patient with a non-tech end-user. Synaptic and the other package managers work. I've installed a program and it works.

I did have "Dummies for Linux" once. I'd better buy a new copy or some such publication and just learn the basic commands, and keep it handy!

You guys are volunteers - you'd never get this if you paid for it [actually my ISP with whom I've been with for more than 10 years is OK]. What a bunch the LInux community is!
