    KDE4 panel distorts

    Hello,
Running Intrepid, AMD64 3500+ 2 gig RAM Default theme

The panel icons seem to distort/change color/disappear as soon as more then about 4 windows are open. Running the mouse cursor over the panel or opening a window brings them back to black but they are very unstable.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure?

Are you refering to the systray? A screenshot would be helpful.

I have a similar problem. Some of my systray icons do disappear sometims (mostly kmix) but they don't go black if I mouse over them. I've attached a screenshot of my panel/systray thingie. Notice the blue square on the right. It's kmix. If I have a full screen video playing and I alt + tab over to firefox, I can still see part of the movie playing in that little square.

kde 4.2 takes care of this. They say it is a problem with QT (I think), but they (the KDE devs) created a work around in 4.2. I have been playing around with the neon builds of 4.2, and it looks real nice!

This is still happening for me. I think I know what you mean. Some are saying KDE 4.2 is a fix but I think they're dreaming.

yep. sorta. I had 4.2 neon installed, and it worked perfectly, however, I now have 4.2 beta 2 installed, and the problem is still there...I don't know what to think now...

Certain applications don't play nice with the panel. When they are open you will see those problems you describe. The kde-neon packages are newer than the beta 2 packages. So if you don't see the problem in neon then I would assume the problem has been fixed.

not the case here...i havent had neon installed since before beta 1, and its things like the battery meter and kmix that distort, not apps that have open windows. I have been toying with compiling myself to see if it fixes it.

I think you misunderstood what I said. The neon version may have fixed the problem, not created it. The neon version is newer than the beta versions.

Also, some applications cause the taskbar and panel to flicker and change colors, etc. The applications themselves look fine. I know Open Office used to always cause the panel and taskbar to do weird things.

The icons in the taskbar still distort, they always have, and it's a known issue. It's slowly being worked on and improved. Compiling yourself probably won't make a difference, though.

I agree entirely this has been a recurrent problem but they seem to have finally licked it in 4.2.

                      Re: KDE4 panel distorts

I don't currently have the neon version installed. I had it installed prior to beta 1 or 2 coming out, and the issue had been fixed. I also saw a note from a developer that states that a workaround was included in KDE4.2. So, while neon may be newer now, it wasn't when I had it installed, since it was a nightly build. To put it another way, the beta's released by the Kubuntu team, are of a more recent build than the neon packages I had installed a month ago. I have since done a complete reinstall.

This bug irritates a lot but as I found in various forums and mail lists it is hard to vanish. This is bug KDE guys are hiding under ¨funeral¨ design. Black rectangle around icons in default themes is intentional. And this bug may be or may be not solved in 4.3 as Aaron acknowledged.
