    password-securing files & folders

hi, anyone know how to set a password onto a file/folder so that only an authorized user can view/open it? likewise, does anyone know how to get rid of the security in case its not needed anymore?
i tried messing with the properties and the access permissions, but it wasnt enough, it only hid the material, but a user can easily changed those settings and get access.

I think your best bet would be to encrypt the folders you don't want others to see
    take a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=892381
