I've installed the Gadmin-proftp app., but it wont start from the menu, and if I try to run from the console, the windows appears for a second before it closes and leaves me with the error "Segmentation fault"

Did you install it through the apt-get or dpkg system? I just popped open Synaptic and it appears to be in a family of gadmin tools -- I would suppose there are a substantial number of GTK-related dependencies -- did you get them?
Otherwise all I can suggest is to pull up your system log at /var/log/syslog and have a look at what is blowing up.
