    Reinstall default kde4 desktop

    Hi,

I found the new desktop very confusing and I managed to make a right mess of it. I had forgotten what the default list of widgets etc.

I searched around and found out that the desktop can be returned to the default settings by deleting the .kde file in the home folder. The system then rebuilds the desktop itself when rebooting.

Is this a safe way of restoring default settings and if so can I "advertise" this on this forum?

    Cheers,
    Mike.

Well, it's generally considered a better practice to rename the file rather than deleting it. That way you can always restore back to what you now have.

Note: This information exists in several threads on the forum already and can be found with the forum search.

If you're just restoring the desktop then you only need to delete the plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc files which are found in .kde/share/config.

Also be aware that for instance kmail stores your mails in a subdirectory of .kde so rename it is the best practice here.

I am of course corrected, you should always rename a file before creating a new version.

If someone can provide a better post regarding this issue then please let me know and I will edit my first post and label it as a solved. I couldn't find such a post on this forum. The idea came from elsewhere.

          Cheers for the feedback,

          Mike.

            Search for

            /.kde_BORKED
The post is rather long, but I think the solution is on the last page. I used it, in fact, it was addressed to me, and it resolved the rebuild of KDE issue that I had. Everything went back to defaults.
