    Re: External Hard Drive Help

What is the external HD being used for? Did it ever have an OS installed on it?

There is a possibility that the USB port you are using is failing. Do you have another open USB port you can try?

No problem here. I love this stuff.

Does this external USB drive require power? If it's a USB 2.0, and your ports are USB 1.1, they won't have enough power to allow the device to be seen.

no... it's ac power.... like i said... it'll work on the windows side... changing the partition types wouldn't affect it at all do you think... not with it not showing up at all

When connected to your eeePC, open a console and type blkid and note the output.

                          Re: External Hard Drive Help

i'm pretty sure the partition was written with vista on the laptop that is broken but at that point it was working with kubuntu 8.04.... i've never actually used the hard drive with the eee but i did check to see if it detected it when trying to troubleshoot the problem myself and it did detect it but i never installed ntfs-3g on the eee so i could never mount it with it.... could it be some missing package that 8.04 had that 8.10 doesn't ? if so any idea on what it would be or how i could install it

                            Re: External Hard Drive Help

Given that you have an ntfs partition on the HD that you can see, then you have the required packages for reading/writing ntfs partitions. Something about the USB HD is what's affecting things. I would be very interested in knowing how the output of blkid changes with the USB HD attached, and then removing it and rerunning blkid. Specifically, does the entry:

                            /dev/loop0: TYPE="squashfs"

show in the list with the HD connected, and does this entry not appear after you remove it (and rerun blkid)?

                                Re: External Hard Drive Help

I was assisting another member yesterday. His output of blkid also show entries of:

                                /dev/loop0: TYPE="squashfs"
                                /dev/loop2: TYPE="squashfs"

He was running a PC with a RAID0 setup on two 250G HDs. Did you purchase this USB HD 'new' or was it ever used in another PC?
