    Bus error problems after update

    Hi there,

have been using 8.10 for over a week, problem free, like it.

Was using Synaptic as package manager, as adept seemed to be somewhat lacking.

Had updates today, which I installed.

Any how, after updates firefox would not start. From the command line it gives the error bus error.
    Synaptic exhibits the same behaviour.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox and synaptic to no avail.

The following is an extract from /var/log/apt/term.log which I believe lists the packages updated, before the errors began appearing. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    Setting up command-not-found-data (0.2.26ubuntu1.1) ...
    Setting up command-not-found (0.2.26ubuntu1.1) ...

    Setting up update-manager-core (1:0.93.34) ...

    Setting up jockey-common (0.5~beta3-0ubuntu6) ...

    Setting up jockey-kde (0.5~beta3-0ubuntu6) ...
    Setting up konversation (1.1-0ubuntu2.1) ...

    Setting up libasound2-plugins (1.0.17-0ubuntu5) ...
    Setting up libglib2.0-0 (2.18.2-0ubuntu2) ...

    Setting up libglib2.0-data (2.18.2-0ubuntu2) ...
    Setting up libpango1.0-common (1.22.2-0ubuntu1)
    Best Regards

Re: Bus error problems after update

Well, what I would do is run firefox from the command line, note the error messages and google them. You may hit on something.

However, there are bound to be more (useful ) suggestions out there...

      Thanks for the suggestion

      ~$ firefox
      Bus error
      ~$

      ~$ sudo synaptic
      [sudo] password for kevp:
      Bus error
      ~$

Is there any way I can get more info from the cli

      Best regards

Re: Bus error problems after update

I've never seen a bus error, but it doesn't sound like a good thing -- probably it is referring to the memory bus on your CPU or motherboard.

You might want to shut down Kubuntu, reboot and choose "Memory Test" on the boot menu, and let it run memtest86 for a few hours (like overnight), to make sure the memory is healthy.

Before you do that, and since it first appeared after updating, you could ensure that your package management system is not compromised somehow, by running
        Code:
        sudo dpkg --configure -a
        I'll cross my fingers....

Re: Bus error problems after update

          Ran sudo dpkg --configure -a

Restarted etc. Could be my ageing hardware. Seemed strange, to me, that Firefox and Synaptic are the only apps misbehaving, so far.

Adept functions ok, as does Konqueror, which I like, but alas Google does not.

          Befuddled, but not beaten yet.

          Thanks
