Did you try booting Recovery Mode? Any luck with "Fix X"?

Given that it's a new installation, perhaps the path of least uncertainty would be to install it anew. Since we're contemplating that path, do you have it on a partition of at least 6GB, and a swap partition equal or a bit larger than your installed memory?

Before doing that, do you even get the KDM logon screen, or do you have no screen at all, even when booting?

Good! When you type in your password, do not hit Enter - yet. Click on the piece of paper icon and select new (empty) session. See if you are able to successfully get logged on with your normal desktop.

I couldn't find a piece of paper. At the login prompt at the bottom I selected KDE login mode. Still no video. I will try again and this time at the login prompt I will select "Default". I will keep you posted.

I tried logging in with "Default" mode, and it is still doing the same thing. Any other ideas, Snowhog Anybody?

Re: Sound not playing, login sound choking up.

I'm not suggesting that you do this. It's your call. But, foregoing any other sage advise being contributed, I'd do the following.

                      1) Reboot into recovery mode. This will put you at the command line prompt. You will be root.
                      2) Rename my hidden .kde folder:
                      Code:
                      mv /home/[your user name here]/.kdm /home/[your user name here]/.kdm_BORKED
(replacing the [your user name here] with your actual user name. example, using my user name: /home/paul/)
                      3) Rebooting:
                      Code:
                      shutdown -r now
When you login from the KDM screen, and assuming that the problem was contained some where within the .kde folder, you should end up at the default desktop. The system will rebuild the .kde folder with default system settings.

Re: Sound not playing, login sound choking up.

                        ~/$:mv /home/theadmiral/.kdm /home/theadmiral/.kdm_BORKED
mv: cannot stat `/home/theadmiral/.kdm': No such file or directory

                        ~/$:mv /home/theadmiral/.kdm /home/theadmiral/.kdm_BORKED
mv: cannot stat `/home/theadmiral/.kdm': No such file or directory
                        root@theadmiral-desktop:~#
Then I navigated to the root directory and tried, with the same error?? Did a "whereis /.kdm" with scores of results. Hmmmm, which one to choose from? Just dunno. Do you? I think this was a good try, if we just knew where the freakin' directory was that we are supposed to label "BORKED".

                          Not .kdm .kde

Given your info, you would type:
                          mv /home/theadmiral/.kde /home/theadmiral/.kde_BORKED

Most excellent! I had the beer about an hour ago, but maybe I'll have another later.

So, were/are you able to then/now follow the instructions I provided in Reply #1?

As to Amarok. Here's what you need to do.
                                01) Open a console and type:
                                cat /etc/fstab
Note the mount point of your CD/DVD drive. Mine shows as:
                                /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
The mount point is in red.
                                02) Put a music CD in your player. Start Amarok.
                                03) Click on Settings > Configure Amarok... > Media Devices
                                04) Click on Add Device...
                                05) Click the down arrow under Select the plugin to use with this device (required): and select Generic Audio Player
                                06) Click the down arrow under Enter a name for this device (required): and type in what you want to call the device - I used CD
                                07) Click the down arrow under Enter the mount point of the device, if applicable: and type in the mount point to your cdrom from the fstab entry
                                08) Click OK, Apply, and OK

At this point, you should only need to click on Engage > Play Audio CD, wait for it to populate the playlist, click on Engage and then click the play button.

I did this exact procedure after reading your post. I have my CD of Enya - The Cels playing as I type this.
And these directions worked, too. Many, many thanks!
