Not completely sure why you posted a policy from the Ubuntu Forum here. The Kubuntu Forums is wholly owned by Open Source, and has no affiliation with Ubuntu Forums, which IMS, is owned by Canonical. A member here asks a question, and within the bounds of reason, if an answer exists, will usually be provided.

Yes, *buntu distros have the root account disabled 'by design.' But it was never intended that a user should never be able to enable it - should the user have a desire to do so, for what ever reason. Even when one temporarily assumes the power of root, they still do so at their own risk.
OK Snowhog, I will explain. As I stated, I posted it for us to consider.

I think several salient points were mentioned in the post, about the security model, about the class of user who might ask the question and also some implications for the forum and its community's ability to support.

I did not criticise anyone for their choices. I did not present it as law. I thought it worth considering, if you disagree, that is OK.

        Didn't take it that way.

One of the things that is implied (and often stated) here, is that we are all 'non-professionals' in that no one here is paid by OS to act as 'support staff' for any one posting questions. It should always be understood by a Forum member deciding to act on any suggestions posted, that they do so at their own risk. When in doubt, either don't do it or ask for further clarification.

To the best of my knowledge, no one here has deliberately posted any procedure that was designed to harm. That's not to say that some very new (to Linux) members haven't, and don't, post suggestions that could be detrimental if acted on.

Discussion is always good. Disagreement isn't bad. Exchange of ideas and information is encouraged. And Linux will always be about being able to choose.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

While I agree that people (forum members and guests alike) should know that, I also know from many years of experience that often they do not. This is especially true of people who are new to both forums and open source software. A community is judged by how it treats it weakest members, the strongest can take care of themselves.
