Re: For The 3rd Time, Linux Wastes Me More Time Than It Saves - Why Linux Fails

"This community is here to help each other..."

This is from our host, Open Source. As a community of Kubuntu users, we congregate here, because we share a common interest - Linux in general, and Kubuntu in particular. That means that we are, to varying degrees, defensive of our interest. When a post basically says "Kubuntu sucks, and I won't use it or recommend it" as opposed to just asking a question (or series of questions) concerning a problem, well, some of our members might be inclined to respond similarly.

There are many good people here. Most are more than willing to come to the aid of a fellow member who is having a problem. Not all will have a ready solution. Many, like myself, are good at trouble-shooting and/or finding help 'on the 'Net.' Patience is a very helpful quality for any Linux user. As has been said many, many times, Linux is not Windows. It does take some time and effort on the part of the user to become familiar with it. Some are luckier than others. They install Linux and everything works. We envy those! For the majority (if I may be so bold) however, everything doesn't just work. And for those, patience is a must.

WHEN YOU INSTALLED COMPIZ KUBUNTU ALSO INSTALLED GNOME. IT'S CALLED A DEPENDENCY.

I don't consider the removal of all desktop elements 'a problem'. Windows perrenial security bugs are a problem. Removal of my desktop is a massive, fatal flaw.
IT DIDN'T REMOVE ANYTHING, IT SWITCHED TO GNOME. YOU CAN SWITCH BACK BY CHOOSING 'SESSION TYPE' AT THE LOGIN SCREEN.
I will type slowly, and explain everything as that seems to be the only way any of you can comprehend.

I installed Compiz within one hour of 8.10. It worked for one day in this configuration.
Then I received the little icon update in the systray to upgrade.
"You have 21 upgrades to install".
      I click yes.
      I reboot.
My box reverts to the look and feel of 6.10 Gnome.
KDE is removed. How do I know?
BECAUSE I OPENED SYNAPTIC AND ALL OF THE PACKAGES WERE NO LONGER INSTALLED. BLANK BOXES BY ALL KD & COMPIZ PACKAGES.
See, I can 'shout' in capitals, too.
Was that simple enough for you to grok?

Honestly, over the past 18 months most support forum contributors are not very helpful.
You assume much, explain little, and ask irrelevant questions.
We assume only intelligence. And if you knew whether a question was relevant or not, you wouldn't be the one asking for support.
I provide support over the phone to the office I work in. In addition to running all the finances, I also maintain the network. I was walking 2 people through technical issues on the phone whilst hiking up in the mountains 2 days ago, w/o any box or screen in front of me.

If you want to sling insults, you are poking the wrong bear, buddy.

Linux will never exceed 1.oo% OS Market Share
      It already has.
No it hasn't. It reached 0.93% in August and dropped to 0.71% last month.

Maybe I should call Canonical and pay for support, because you all do not seem to know what you are doing, and are unwilling to listen to any criticism from someone 'outside' of your community.

This fact is then crucial. Let people know before hand: "This will take up much of your time. It is more a hobby than a time-saving OS."

People need to know that this will become a massive time sink.

Most people have other things to do with their life.

All of the businesspeople I know do not have time to waste, or patience. Whilst I am not installing 8.10 at the office, I DO have the same attitude of time compression and urgency that they have.

Clearly, Linux and most of you all are not prepared to encounter that attitude.

When I get criticism at the office, if valid I reply "Yes, you are right. I will do ABCD."

Clearly you all are unwilling to adopt a similar attitude.

Please don't take the portion of what I said, and that you've quoted, out of context. When I said that 'everything doesn't just work" that wasn't meant to mean that "nothing" works. Far from it. It is rare that absolutely nothing works, although I'm sure it is possible.

If Linux isn't going to be your cup of tea, you aren't being forced to use it.

Clearly not many business people on this, or any other, Linux forum. If you create a product, and someone uses it, it is 100.00% unacceptable to state 'that it isn't your cup of tea'.

Here is a major complaint, one that I have had with Sabayon, PCLOS and (K)Ubuntu.

            Finding files.

I have asked multiple times, yet not one person has been willing or able to tell me how to do so.

After yet another search on Google, I have finally found the answer. After 18 months and multiple search queries and hours of trying to figure out what search string will provide an answer.

The problem is that when one pulls up a console and types --help, the list of commands given IS INCOMPLETE.
I cannot find any rational explanation to NOT list all of the command line commands when a universal entry like 'help' is entered. This makes absolutely NO SENSE.

So, finding files is made intentionally difficult.

The key is to open a console and type 'which' or 'whereis' followed by the known app. This will NOT work with non-executables. There it pops up:

            root@ibex:/usr/bin# which ktorrent
            /usr/bin/ktorrent

Why make this so buried, cryptic and undocumented that no one is willing or able to share this? Makes no sense. 5 out of 6 Linux webpages with command lists do not have this.

The other user friendly interface is kfind. 'Which kfind' returns one result.
            root@ibex:/# which kfind
            /usr/bin/kfind

But in order to find the search application, you need to know about a command {'which'} that is hidden and not documented.

            Brilliant.

In any event, this will go into my file of quick fixes to make it easier for others to find these buried commands.

Re: For The 3rd Time, Linux Wastes Me More Time Than It Saves - Why Linux Fails

As Snowhog said, Linux is more of a community!
I'll site an example, see this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...bs/+bug/290589
^^^ I filed this bug and it got addressed and fixed in no time! I now cannot reproduce the bug anymore. And this is not the only one, same applies to almost all Kubuntu bugs I have reported.

The point is, rather than writing a whole long paragraph of rant here, why not just file a bug/wish at launchpad or bugs.kde.org ?
Got some new ideas? Why not share at brainstorm.ubuntu.com ? I'm sure that bug filing and sharing would be much less tiring than this and will have positive results as well.
And if you don't have time to contribute, please don't devote time on long threads like these, which have nothing but rants.

I don't see how this thread is fruitful.

              Closing the thread.
