Re: For The 3rd Time, Linux Wastes Me More Time Than It Saves - Why Linux Fails

KDE 4.1.x has many features similar to compiz now. Not as flashy as compiz, but flashy enough i think.

It is bringing similar features like application grid, desktop grid, window effects and so on.

Re: For The 3rd Time, Linux Wastes Me More Time Than It Saves - Why Linux Fails

I am laughing inside... and now... outside. I've seen the general post dozens of times, it doesn't really warrant a real response, just mockery. Same thing used to happen on IRC back in the day on one of the #linux channels I used to frequent. It's always someone who can't grasp the concept of linux, get frustrated, then toss insults like the entire world will gather party and ride to their aid like valiant knights on horse back (It's funnier if you picture the "ka-nig-its" wearing tux tabbards).

So, my only real "reply" to the post itself is... Linux never fails... only the user. One linux build does not suit everyone, if it did, there's be no such thing as Redhat, Slackware, Debian, etc. This isn't highlander, "there can be only one" doesn't apply to linux.

Also, don't jump into a forum slinging insults, it doesn't get you help nor` pitty. I don't know about everyone else, but if someone ran up in my house and started insulting me, I'd bi*ch slap them long before I offered to help them.

So the subject REALLY is .... Why leeraconteur fails.....

There are three kinds of people in the world; those who can count and those who can't.

LoL! My main issue has always been that linux is not for everyone. I've always considered it the "thinkin` man's" OS. While linux has gotten considerably smarter over the years and require significantly less work, you still have to do your research. I don't mind helping someone if they seem like they just need a place to start or a point in the right direction, or even if they looked high and low and just couldn't figure it out. But, if you aren't even going to try, and just expect other people to fix your system for you.. well.. i wash my hands of that. I work at a PC repair shop part time, and we get PAID for stuff like that. For people who want everything on their OS handed to them there's Windows and OSX.

                1) Do not install Compiz. It is still unstable more than one year later, the time and issues involved render the improvements it brings null. You will waste more time tinkering to get it to work than you gain in productivity and enjoyment. In short, Compiz will break your OS. Don't use it.
True on KDE. KDE's long had problems with Compiz. On Gnome it works a lot better.
A warning would be helpful, and why would you knowingly allow a package repo d/l that is a known issue with the desktop interface? Such an attitude makes no sense at all.

2.) Do not install updates for 8.10 from Ubuntu unless you want all plasmoid desktop functionality to disappear and revert your desktop to the appearance of 6.10 Gnome. These updates will also break your OS.
Your desktop is the appearance of 8.10 Gnome. That's because you installed Gnome, perhaps without meaning to. (As is mentioned, the standard Compiz install mentioned it)
I did not install Gnome. I updated what was suggested in the systray, and it reverted b/c KDE and Compiz no longer worked after the updates.

3.) When installing any major package, reboot your system to get all the config files in line. Especially when installing NVidia drivers. Just like windows, reboot after any software install. 8.10 is touchy. Do not just install and then use the software.
That's a cautious approach, not usually needed. Though things can behave weirdly after updates.
My experiences over the past 18 months suggest otherwise. Update, install, then reboot to be sure of fewer issues. If you have time to waste, then by all means don't reboot

4.) Do not use ctrl-alt-backspace to reboot x-server unless there is no other choice. This will leave corrupted config files all over the place, and wreck your graphic interface when you reboot.
It's not usually going to corrupt things, but it could.
Alerting users to this would be wise, before hand.

5.) Kubuntu is still a toy. Maybe if there was a professional support package that had 24-7-365 support available by phone, IM, chat and internet, for a reasonable cost, then Kubuntu would be usable for someone with mission and time criticality.
Canonical offer support. Distributions like Red Hat Enterprise, SuSE Enterprise, and others also have support. It's not cheap, but enterprise support never is.
You are not reading me clearly. I am using this at home, and I am busy and expect it to work at home.
6.) Do not install 8.10 at work, unless you want the owner to fire you, or unless you plan to spend all of your spare time tinkering with it to get it to work.

I run the network for the small business I work at. The owner wants results, fast. As in within 3 seconds. If you intend for people to use 8.10 in such environments, then it must be more robust. As this is today, it is unsuitable and unstable.
We don't intend 8.10 for such environments. Use 8.04, or an enterprise distribution. You shouldn't be surprised at new releases having problems.
I don't consider the removal of all desktop elements 'a problem'. Windows perrenial security bugs are a problem. Removal of my desktop is a massive, fatal flaw.

7.)Online support forums, like Linux itself, are run and staffed by volunteers. We're not being paid to read rants.
Honestly, over the past 18 months most support forum contributors are not very helpful.
You assume much, explain little, and ask irrelevant questions.

Interesting that my clear criticisms are soon labeled 'trolling'.
If that is how you respond to criticism, then Linux will never exceed 1.oo% OS Market Share, even though it is 'better', 'safer' and 'faster'.

Fix it. Make your comments helpful. I read and research and look into problems and what I find are 6 solutions to everything, some of which do not work.

Clearly YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW or do not care and won't let on. Keep this your little club. If you keep reading this same post from different users, then maybe there is a flaw in your way of thinking and your attitudes.

This isn't about intelligence or being a 'thinking man', it is about wasting my time.
You want to waste your time learning how to build a car just to drive a car, that is your choice.
You don't want to help those who just want to drive a car and save themselves time, then you will live with the consequences of me telling everyone who asks to never use Linux. Your choice.

I could recommend to all at the office and my immediate family, but I won't until these issues are fixed.

                        You COULD have thought:

"Hey, this guy is obviously a power user on Windows, and is finding all of the flaws in multiple Flavours, maybe he would be a good beta tester or someone to ask what changes to make to improve the OS' for the general, non-hobbiest, non-converted public."

Nope, that's not what you guys thought.

I see your point about this new version, and will in no way bash you for it. I do not see all of your points but the over all point that 8.10 should not be a production release!!!!! I like the way it looks and I like the new Dolphin but with out hard ware support it is not going to fly with me.

As for help from this group I my self have seen some less then kind relpys from this group.
the other day a read a post ware a noob was asking for help and the was a reply I dont have time for noob questions. That pissed me off!!! This forum is full of geeks and nerds, and these types have to bash the lesser. Most of my questions are answered by google not this forum. When I find the answer it mostly comes from the Ubuntu forum, go figure. Please do not think I feel this way about every one this group, but there is a select few out there.

I love Kubuntu but am not hope full for 8.10. I will give it another go when they get KDE4.2 running but not before then, as it is a wast of time. I spent 2 weeks and all most had it working for me and then I plugged in my camera. Well that did not go well, and that was the last second I spent on 8.10.

In one day with Ubuntu 8.10 I have more working than I did with Kubuntu 8.10 in 2 weeks. Things like Compiz, VirutalBox, AWN, Picasa, My camera. shared networking, TrueCrypt, Pidgin, my network printer, Dolphin, and much more. I had all this setup in one day.

So my point here is stop bashing people cause they have issues with 8.10. Its not a good working OS and if you think it is good for you but look at the forum posts they are not good.
