What do I see? All of my wallpaper, my compiz, my plasmoids, all the graphic interfaces that ARE THE REASON WHY I CHOSE 8.10, they are all GONE and I am staring at a plain jane, none 3d interface with the off tan theme from Ubuntu 6.10 .
But, Ubuntu 6.10? Do you mean "looks like" or "actually is"? I have no clue how one would get a 6.10 splash onto a 8.10 system -- I think it would be a tricky maneuver, at best.

Re: What Just Happened to My Installation?

That's Gnome! You evidently have got it on your system somehow, and it's logging you into that rather than KDE.

Now we know what the problem is, it should be an easy fix, though I'm not sure how myself.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.

Re: What Just Happened to My Installation?

first off, i just ran update and it wants a complete restart because it updated the kernel, a alt-ctrl-backspace may have been a bad thing.

second, I have had problems with aged hippie's responses before. I am not a forum cop but please everyone think about a glib response to some one that is really upset. They can get upset and leave us and tell others that kubuntu forums is populated with linux snobs.

Re: What Just Happened to My Installation?

I check the box, go to enable and this:

"KDE4 cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)

Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type."

          What the !@#$% is this!

Ok. I am copying all my files to another drive, and I am going to reinstall this.

I hate burning my time like this...

I up-dated at mid-day, the kernel was up-dated but this particular installation has had no problems at all.

... although from the log-in screen to the not-desktop was noticably much quicker.

Incidentally, i just checked Synaptic again, and there are no more updates to apply this evening.

Although I've never seen that specific message, it seems to suggest an architecture mis-match -- like a 64-bit package trying to be installed on a 32-bit system.

But, there's something really wrong -- choosing the KDE login menu item should not result in anything related to installing -- that's an indicator of something way wrong.

              EDIT: I'd try
              Code:
              sudo dpkg --configure -a
one time, just in case there's something hung up in the package manager.
