[SOLVED] No GUI appears for Thunderbird

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble getting Thunderbird to start on 8.10 -- neither from the menu nor from the command line. Funny thing is, I'm also not seeing any error messages reported from Thunderbird in ANY of the /var/log files, nor am I getting any errors if I run it from the command line (even with the --g-fatal-warnings).

About the only difference I'm seeing from the two different methods is that when I try from the menu I at least get -- for about 20 seconds -- an entry in the task bar, but nothing happens when I try from the command line.

    Thunderbird 2.0.0.17, Copyright (c) 1998-2008 mozilla.org
    KDE 4.1.2
    vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic (x86_64)

I have about 37GB free in /home and 53GB in /, so I should have lots of space.

Any ideas about what could be going on here would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: I've determined (see below) that the processes for Thunderbird are starting, but I'm not getting a GUI for it. I would appreciate any ideas here.

    Re: Thunderbird not starting

not sure, but a couple things I would try...

    1) first thing I would try is renaming the ~/.mozilla thunderbird (I think that is right...) directory to something else (add -old maybe) and try to start it...this will have the effect of starting from scratch (you will lose your settings, etc), but you can at least see if it starts, then add things back in 1 at a time to see what causes the failure...

    2) completely uninstall, and reinstall.

Other than that, I don't know what it is...was this installed from the repository, or did you manually install from mozilla?

I've already tried #2 with no success. I'll try #1 when I get home tonight, which unfortunately won't be until quite late. Thanks for the reply. I'll post again once I've tried this.

        Re: Thunderbird not starting

OK, a bit of weirdness. It seems Thunderbird is actually starting, I'm just not getting a GUI for it:

        andrewkm@Ubuntu64:~$ thunderbird&
andrewkm@Ubuntu64:~$ ps -ef | grep thunder

        andrewkm 8000 7860 0 01:20 pts/1 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/thunderbird
        andrewkm 8012 8000 0 01:20 pts/1 00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin
        andrewkm 8016 8012 0 01:20 pts/1 00:00:01 /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin

I do get a pop-up saying that my password to my mail server was rejected (I must have entered it incorrectly at setup) but that's it.

Any ideas at all why I'm not getting the GUI?

Any ideas at all here? I'm even hearing the beep it makes when it finishes downloading my mail, but there's no GUI visible.

This was simply installed with the adept installer.

It isn't just sitting on Desktop 2, with the Task Manager set to "Only show tasks from the current desktop"?? I see that on mine it will show up on Desktop 1 on a restart, but perhaps you have a bit more going on with your setup... have you played with those new "activities" or anything?

No, I'm used to multiple desktops -- I use them at work all the time to organize my windows depending on what systems I'm accessing in each. That was the first thing I checked.

There just simply doesn't seem to be a GUI.

Yeah, figured it was a long shot... good luck with your problem.

Re: No GUI appears for Thunderbird

is it possible that it is opening up off screen, maybe by a 'windows behavior' rule (IE you have a 1024x768 screen, but you have it opening at 1025, 0)? This is all I can think of...check out your rules, just to be sure...although, I would think it would still show in the task bar...

                    A long-shot, but ...

                    K Menu > System Settings > Window Behavior > Window-Specific

See if Thunderbird is listed. If it is, highlight it and click the Modify... button and click on the Geometry tab and see if the size button is checked and what the height, width settings are.

Re: No GUI appears for Thunderbird

Thank you for the suggestions so far.

Unfortunately, my "Window-Specific" settings are empty.

If it helps -- and it probably does -- I have an ATI 4850, with a Samsung T220 monitor (using DVI, of course). The card is using the fglrx driver provided by the package, the monitor is just pNp. I've used the Catalyst control centre to set the card to "single display" mode.

One thing I haven't tried, though, is switching the monitor to the other output jack on the card, or even hooking up old spare CRT monitor and getting the card in dual-display mode to see if it shows up on the other. That *shouldn't* make a difference, but I did have the second monitor hooked up for a while while I was getting the ATI driver configured with 8.10, so maybe something FUBARed in that process and *somehow*, even though no such monitor exists, it's opening Thunderbird on that other screen.

Long shot, but might be it. I'm going to try this:
                      1) Switching the monitor to the other output on the card.
                      2) Hooking up both monitors
                      3) Hooking up just the CRT

                      And see if anything happens.

Interesting, I accidentally clicked on "KRandRTray" while looking for something else under Kmenu->Applications->System, and that also is not giving me a GUI to use. Not sure if it's the same problem, but interesting.

Damnit, switching the inputs on the card worked.

Now why in the word THAT would make a difference, I have no idea.

Can any offer any ideas on that one? Probably an ATI bug as opposed to anything ubuntu related, I'm guessing, though.

                        Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: No GUI appears for Thunderbird

                          Yes, I can.

You're running dual-monitors? At some point, you had TT open on "the other monitor" and the screen position geometry was recorded. Subsequently, you switched the monitors around? A guess. But, I recently got a second monitor at work, and I've experienced this myself.

When running dual-monitors, one of them is set as "primary" and the other is therefore the extension of the desktop.

I *had* dual monitors set up, then removed one and went into the setup utility and explicity set "use single monitor". At that point, I would have hoped either the OS/WM/Driver were smart enough NOT to put anything on that other monitor anymore.

Still, I can live with it now.

I have even had this problem in Windows...if a program is written to 'remember it's location, and does not have safeguards against this, there is nothing the OS can do about it. I'm glad it is sorted. Now that you have it opening on the primary monitor, my guess is that you could move the input back (if there was a reason to), and all would be well...
