Same here (Dell Latitude D630)... it seems to me that if you disable the advanced effects, the system is more stable. Of course there's a bug somewhere.

Likewise. IBM R50e. Randomly logs out.

You didn't say which Intel graphics chip -- near the bottom of the 8.10 release notes are a couple of problem chips:

                Re: x-server crashes

I have the same problem with an Acer Aspire 1510 and nvidia graphic card 5700. I looked at the file .xsession-errors and the problem seems related to some kde programs suddenly crashing. This is a really awful bug. I tried to remove the .kde directory but it didn't seem to solve the problem. It doesn't seem that there is anything in particular that makes it crash. It just does. I had kde 4.1 working on kubuntu hardy remix without any problems. This upgrade has been just a really big step back.
By the way, I have done the upgrade and I was thinking to give it a try with a fresh installation. Did other people get the same problem from a fresh installation as well?

                  Re: x-server crashes

I had given up and wanted to install gnome instead of kde because I did not feel like reinstalling the whole distribution. So I just installed "ubuntu-desktop" and removed a lot of configuration files from my directory and I started gnome. It worked flawlessly. Only problem is that now also kde works flawlessly. It must have been a problem with the upgrade. Something was messed up.
In the .xsession-errors file that now I am unable to reproduce it said that the services NepomukServer and kaccess crashed. Here are some hints:

well, instead of starting with kde, i started with gnome. and gnome does not crash. so it's something with kde. but don't know what.
