NVIDIA GeFOrce 7300 - Desktop effects not working

Hi,

I just installed kubuntu 8.10 because i tried kde4 on 8.04 and i was so excited that i wanted the cutting edge version....


I had some problems:

desktop effects caused the screen to become blank, i solved this by setting in Adanced Options>Compositing Type XRender


the problem now is that effects just do not work, for example the present windows or the explosion effects do not work.

maybe you could give some specs?
Like gapfic card, cpu, ram, etc.

Yes I have an acer aspire 5630 ( Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz, Ram 2GHz) with an NVIDIA GeForce GO 7300.


It seems that the problem depend on the fact that on 8.04 I had NVIDIA drivers using envyng, now I am not able to install drivers through envy (says that the os is not supported).


I'll try to directly recompile the kernel without the NVIDIA GPL driver.

Before you do that, unless you are knowledgeable enough, try changing your title to include your video card. I know there were some difficulties with nivdia cards in II alpha and parts of beta. We are now in RC so II is still in a non stable phase.

Make it easy for yourself -- in the Konsole:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install envyng-core

sudo envyng -t

Choose #1 "Install Nvidia driver"

Then choose #5 "Restart X server"

Envyng-core has no installation candidates. Are you sure about what are you saying?

I had one version (i upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10) but was not recognizing my the version (envyng work with 8.04 no 8.10).



I installed the nvidia driver from nvidia web site, now I use OpenGL as composting type. This removed some noise i had before (with renderx black lines appered from time to time).


But:

desktop effects are still not working
login is really slow (about 2 min to use the system)

KDE4 on kubuntu 8.04 is working better.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

Yes, -- envyng is available in the Intrepid repos. I wonder if you have "multiverse" and "universe" enabled?

OK, thank you I was missing that repositories.


The system now works better (i updated some packages and now it is usable).


But effects still do not work...

I use Compiz. I dunno how well the *buntu "Desktop Effects" work.

The problem is that when I installed KDE4 on ubuntu 8.04 they worked really well (this is why i decided to switch to 8.10).

Am I the only one with desktop effects not working?

Does anybody know what kind of problem is preventing them from working correctly. Maybe different configuration or something like that..

My desktop effects work fine with my old ati 9250 pro card.

Much faster than with compiz

Open a Konsole window and run glxgears. If it won't run, your Nvidia driver is not installed.

nvidia drivers are working, glxgears works and also nvidia-settings (i had no time to check the secondary output but i thing it works).

unfortunately effects do not work yet

What happens when you go to: systemsettings->desktop->desktopeffects->activate=??
