K3b makes coasters, nero writes cd.'s

The last few weeks k3b has been writing cd's and dvd's nicely.Laste it stopped doing that with notices like: not permission for this drive, or cannaot fixate.

I had to copy some data to a cd for a client and was desperte so I had tio do what I have done in the past. Download nero for linux.
    It works. Period.

I want to keep using k3b and was happy that it was working on my machine again, at least fro a while. I really cannot live with this "works now, maybe will work again" s....t.

For those who would like to help me stop getting mad (it is a long read:

cheers to all as usual and thank you for any help

I'll be honest, i got tired of all the parties i was having to hold in order to use up all those coasters so i installed Brasero.

Oddly, i couldn't get it to burn the Intrepid .iso at 4x, it insisted on 39.9x and did it in a couple of minutes.
I thought "Bin", then "No, try it".... it checked with no defects.

    I'll stick with Brasero.

I dunno if you have had recent issues with the new update from k3b too...hmm..it will not update on mine and has been held back for a while now.

Mind you I have had no problems with mine recently..hmmm

Anything we can still help with ?

I've been looking for nero for linux, where? Stopped using k3b bout a month ago, to many problems and shifted to Brasero, as many distros shifted, must be something to that.

brasero used to be decent alternative to K3b -- I haven't tried it lately.

              Maybe (k3bError.txt ) it is:
/usr/bin/wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.scsidev
              A bug report: Bug #149076: I can't write a cd

              There are workarounds:
              - slower burnspeed
              - purging and reinstalling k3b
              - replacing wodim
              - ...

But it seems that those workarounds may or may not work .

Thank you Rog and all the rest of you.
                - slower burnspeed
Actually that is what I had to do up until a few days ago. Well sort of the first burn "try" would be at 12x, which was refused before burning. I then qwould switch to x8 and it would work. This was not perfect but workable. Now k3b goes through with the burn just to tell me that it cannot fixate the media.

I will try purging and keep you posted as to the results

                - replacing wodim
I read that just now but can't get my mind around using a work around for a default application, but might have to bite the dust

As for Brasero. No go (see attachment)

Re: K3b makes coasters, nero writes cd.'s

I had another look at this:
and tried this on my HH install:
                  Quote from bugreport:
I've been using a work around here for a few weeks to test and it seems to be working. BONUS - no symlinks and you can try it without any permanent changes.

                  1. When Grub loads hit the key to edit the commands "e", this should bring up a series of lines "root", "kernel", and "initrd".
                  2. You want to modify the "kernel" line, so go to the end of that line.
                  3. Add the following all_generic_ide=1
                  4. Press the "b" key to boot with the changes.

This change is temporary and will disappear when you reboot so if it doesn't work then reboot, no harm, no foul.

If it does work you can simply go in to /etc/boot/grub/ and edit the .conf file by adding the text to the kernel line. I'd recommend only adding it to the non recovery lines so you can use them as a fail safe if for some reason this stops working. Also as a side note, when you upgrade your kernel with apt it will prompt you to either accept the package maintainers version, compare the two, or do a three way merge. I just accept the maintainers version and then edit the line again because I don't trust the system to intelligently combine the two files.

Lastly, my system is entirely ide (PATA) drives (HD and two burners - see the k3berror.txt attachment for more info), so I'm not sure how this would work if you have SATA drives installed. IMHO this problem goes further then a bad version of wodim, I started having problems when libata was upgraded to start automatically using SATA designations (i.e. sda instead of hda) for all drives regardless of type, I think there is something funny about the way they emulate the IDE controls through the SATA interface (if that makes any sense).
That did not work although I can follow the logic.

                  I then tried this:
                  http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...55&postcount=5

                  That didn't work either.

so it is back to nero, at least for now >

                    Dear All,

I also get error and error with K3B - and the funny thing is: I tries to burn latest kubuntu :-)
Tried many workarrounds which are floating arround in the net. Non worked.

Now I have also used NERO (Demo), which worked. I wonder why no one seams like getting a fix on this. Everything what I found in the web was 0% concrete. Just "try this and try that". Thats not a really issue solving or fixing.

Anything I can help - I will provide info about (logs, system, versions, etc).

                    Cheers,
                    Oliver

Hmm. Don't know what may be the underlying issue for those expressing problems with K3b, but I've used it exclusively since installing Kubuntu (Feisty through Intrepid), and it has never failed me. In fact, I burned a Mepis 7 LiveCD last night with no problems what so ever.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Re: K3b makes coasters, nero writes cd.'s

                        Unbelievable...

                        seems solved now ....

                        For everyone who is interested....

                        1. replaced wodim with cdrecord
                        2. changed SUID bit for the new installed files

Then I got several "not so critical" errors/warnings anymore in the beginning of the burn process - but it did not change anything in the result

                        3. I did in K3B:

Settings --> Configure k3b --> Advanced --> Burning --> Manual writing application selection

(found that in one forum as well by luck)

After this 3rd point I can burn CDs again. No restriction in speed or mode...

                        Cheers,
                        Oliver

More recently since a recent upgrade to k3b which I managed to do via adept I noticed I could no longer burn mp3s as audio files and then after a while on adept noticed that there were 2 extra codecs one was libk3b2 and that did not work with the new k3b...it uninstalled k3b when you tried to install it. There is now a libk3b3 which has the new codecs including those for mp3 and it now works properly ie it burns mp3s to audio files...sneaky one though. Cannot understand why it does not install it directly with k3b

Re: K3b makes coasters, nero writes cd.'s

I don't see how anyone can claim they have no problems with k3b. They must not really use it.

It's the program I use for CD and DVD burning, burning a CD or DVD iso (for installing a distro) and other functions.

But, I keep getting errors when I click to verify the burn. I googled and discovered that claims were made that if you click to NOT eject after the writing, that you could avoid the error.

But, I have that option selected and I still get an error while it's trying to verify.

I would like to know if there are any current alternatives to k3b since I've had it with that program.

My theory is that some major modification to the program happened between the upgrade in versions between 1.0.3 and 1.0.4.

That's why some people have it working. Mepis 7 uses k3b version 1.0.3. So, guess what, no problems! I have tested this since I have Mepis 7 still in a partition. I usually go to Mepis when I need to burn a CD or DVD. But, I wanted to upgrade to Mepis 8.

I am in Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8,04 but I already know of a fellow Linux user who was using k3b ver. 1.0.5 and it is doing the same thing: gives an error during verification. We speculated that it might be bad discs but I bought Taiyo Yuden discs and tried it with them in Hardy. Same thing!

The latest version of k3b has BUGS! Don't tell me you don't have problems with it unless you have tried the later versions. Thanks. I'm kidding... btw. I just think there is something wrong with the program. I've tested on it with so many different scenarios.
