It actually started yesterday, I think. I haven't spent much time trying to deal with it. As a user:

So I guess it must be "permissions" related. I haven't done anything unusual -- haven't touched the audio setup in a long while, so it must have been re-arranged by recent updates.

EDIT: OK, so I applied today's updates, which asked for a reboot. After rebooting, audio is back to normal. I dunno, maybe I was hallucinating ....
