    Firefox...

What is it with Firefox? Tonight there were over 60 packages to upgrade, among them Ff and its Branding. Without Ff (and its Branding,) there were only 6 to upgrade.

I'm using Konqueror at the moment....

I'll have to go back to Hardy to use Ff again.

As a supplementary question, does anyone know what all the crap is that Ff pulls in with itself when you install it?

I installed it in precisely the same manner in Intrepid as i did in Hardy, but i noticed at the time that it pulled in the Branding thing, and upgraded itself to 3.0.3, whereas here (at the moment on Hardy) it is still 3.0.1, and it doesn't want to be upgraded at all, although Thunderbird would like to be.

I have pinned it in Intrepid as well as Hardy.... what is going on? Does anyone know?

Does any one know what the Branding is for... or -- more importantly -- doing? Or why the kde-desktop should need to be upgraded (that was in there along with apparently half the OS) when Ff is upgraded?

      Re: Firefox...

Well, hmmm -- I'll tell you what I've done, and the results, although I don't know that it will be fully responsive to the questions you've asked.

Being a habitual FF user for some years, it was maybe the second package I installed after Intrepid Ibex came up the first time. So, it was FF 3.whatever. Subsequently I installed the various flash players and media players for it, and have kept the system updated through today.

So, in "Help > About" it says this:

      Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3
And everything is working just fine, including my personal suite of acid test media sites:

      http://www.elsevier.nl/web/Video.htm

      http://www.foxnews.com/video/

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/video_and_audio/default.stm

      http://abcnews.go.com/

But still no-go at cnn.com -- not sure what the deal is with their stream.

BBC Radio can be heard if you choose the "realplayer" stream/mode.

        Re: Firefox...

Today was the first I noticed the "Branding" package. However, if you look up what it installs it appears to be all the icons and theme details for Firefox. Perhaps they're separating that part to make it easier to match the theme to the desktop environment in the future. Just a guess.

3.0.3 is the most current version. I'm guessing Hardy's packages are not in the main repositories yet. Dunno why.

The "branding" is a word that m$ uses to add its name to everything.
In the case of Kubuntu it seems to be to add a distinctive Ubuntu / Kubuntu touch to plain standard firefox.
It shows up under tools | add-ons | extensions and also in adept. You can remove it if you want plain firefox.

I like ff, it shows some pages better than konqueror, although I also found one that konqueror displays better.
I suppose that I'm used to ff and it works well with the plug-ins and everything that I want to do.

Maybe it could include bit torrent downloads or resume from broken connections, that would be an improvement.
