    [SOLVED] cdrom no longer recoqnized

    Hi,

k3b reports "No CD/DVD writer found.
K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features like audio track extraction or audio transcoding or ISO9660 image creation."

    Tried with kdesudo, same thing

If i insert a cd/dvd nothing happens. Dolphin doesn't seem to know that there's cd/dvd also. My useraccount belongs to groups cdrom and plugdev.
it used to work about week ago, so some updates broke it.
The rom is not broke, i confirmed it.
    So what's the fix ?

    Tried with kdesudo
    Try:
    sudo
    (It's kdesu, not kdesudo)

        Re: cdrom no longer recoqnized

        Somebody been at your computer?

        Here a few troubleshooting tips:

        1. Place a live CD in the optical drive, adjust your BIOS to start from the CD drive and reboot. Does the live CD start, i.e. does the BIOS recognise the drive?

        2. If not, open up the computer, check whether the cables are in order.

        3. Attempt 1. again.

        4. If 1 works but your kubuntu still cannot see your disk drive report back.

            Thanks.

Secondly, do you or have you at any stage used powertop? Or anything else that messes up your hal-polling?

You could attempt to do a
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
Takes a while... Attempt the CD again. I am afraid that all I've found out about hal is that its config files end in *.fdi. A quick locate on my box tells me that we have a pref file in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi - check that and see whether there are any references to a CD drive.

              Re: cdrom no longer recoqnized

I know that others in the Forum have (recently) posted on 'loss' of their CDROM. What I remember of those posts, is that the device designation for the cdrom 'changed' and that the application trying to use it had the 'old' designation. The fix is to change the device name in the applications settings.

If I understand you correctly Snowhog, does that mean one would have to change the drive setting in K3b only?

                @ marttali

Well, if there is a solution out there... Have you searched the forum?

                  Re: cdrom no longer recoqnized

I believe that is correct. I tried searching the Forum last night on this, but didn't find what I was looking for. But, there are posts here on cdrom device designations having changed 'after an update/upgrade (?))' and that the fix was to tell the no longer working application (that uses the cdrom) what the new device designation is.

                    Re: cdrom no longer recoqnized

As i already told, there is no sign of cdrom in either lshw or hwinfo or hal-device-manager. Atleast i cant see it.
I tried though in k3b to add readonly and writeable devices- /media/cdrom -"couldn't find..." was the response.

                      Re: cdrom no longer recoqnized

In that case your problem is probably applicable to all sorts of *ubuntus and I would suggest you move on to the ubuntu forum with your troubles, seeing that you haven't been successful here. The ubuntu forum has a lot more people on it and might well fit your purpose.

By all means let us know of the solution once you've found it, though!

                          My problem is solved !
Solution - changed the cdrom jumper settings from slave to master. Cdrom is IDE. So I have 2 masters now- SATA HDD and IDE cdrom. That's it.
8.04 didn't have problem with it, 8.10 doesn't like it apparently.
