In kde3 you could go to system settings, advanced, system services and could choose what you wanted stopped or started on boot. I don't see that in kde4. has it been removed? replaced with something else? I haven't been able to locate it and would like to turn off some services I am not using nor plan to.

Hi,

Thanks but I've been there with that and it only shows whats related to kde. I'd like to be able to turn on and off the firewall or vsftpd or acpi. I don't see those listed yet I can see them loading on boot up. In the old kde I could pick and choose what I wanted to start and stop. I don't see that here with
System Settings > Advanced > Service Manager
and
System Settings > Advanced > Autostart

it also would prompt for root pw when making a change here I don't even see an admin box to click

I don't know if this is of any help - nor if it is safe to do, but if you run kcontrol and select System Administration ->System Services, you can switch things off at boot from there in Administrator Mode.

I haven't fiddled with anything in there yet.... which is probably why this installation is so long-lived.

Hi,

Ahhh would that I could. Seems kcontrol is not a part of kde4. it's getting to seem more and more that they have taken away a lot of the control one had with the system. If I run into to many of these seemingly restrictive situations (ala windows) I'm going to try Gnome. It use to be so easy to manage your own system and now everyone else seems to think they know whats right for me.... Sorry for ranting but this is/was supposed to be easier........

I'm running the Hardy 3.5.10/KDE 4 desktop, and it's here, perhaps i'll continue running the Hardy 3.5.10/KDE 4 desktop.

Still beta. Quite a few things missing from system settings including the ability to mount other drives. This works fine with other distros but Kubuntu only has KDE for these things. I know they will have this straight before release.

8.10 KDE4 has a System Services menu analogous to the one in KDE 3.5. I'm away from my Kubuntu system, but as I recall it's KMenu>System Settings>Advanced and then maybe "Services". To disable automatic startup of a given service, you click a "<" icon to move it from the right window to the left window. Be cautious - don't turn off anything that you're not certain you can do without. For example, I have no Bluetooth devices, and don't use the LIRC capability of my PVR card, so I turn those off on mine.

Thanks to all who responded. This is on my spare box and I just wanted to try kde4 to see if I wanted to upgrade once it's released. But with all the short comings I may have to wait till the "official" release and take another look. On my home box I use kde3 and if kde4 is just like it's beta I am not upgrading. One of my biggest peeves with kde4 is that you can't hide the panel. Sigh.....

You will be able to hide the panel. Other distros have it already with kde 4.1.2 and Kubuntu will catch up. Currently system service option are greyed out. But will available soon I hope.

My thanks oh aged one.... :-) But for right now I don't want to remove it because I am trying to find the differences and see what I like and don't like. If I get frustrated enough, I'll remove it....

You are Welcome.

One way to improve the look of the awful (in my opinion) thing is to ->Desktop Settings ->New Theme and try one or two out.

Glassified makes it semi-transparent, and if you do remove it, it does make the widgets transparent. There are others with similar effects.
