    SOLVED - usb devices?

I upgraded it Ibex this morning and now none of my USB devices are detected. Can't access my USB hard drive or my USB camera.

Any hints as to how I might get to them? Soon?

There is a quick tutorial here about automounting USB devices in kde4 which might help: http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials/KDE3toKDE4

      Re: usb devices?

I've got mine fully updated, including the new kernel 2.6.27-7. My USB thumb drive is recognized, and ekiga tested OK on my headphones. But my Logitech QuickCam Connect still doesn't come up, either in ekiga or camorama. So .....

Thanks for the info. I'm a noob to linux and those instructions look more complex than I'm willing to deal with. Guess I'll back out to 8.04 until 8.10 automatically mounts USB devices. Hopefully it will?

          Re: usb devices?

I'm a little surprised that there's a problem with your USB hard drive. If you will plug it in to the USB connector first, then power it on, wait 2 minutes and then open the Konsole and enter
          Code:
          lsusb
it would be interesting to see what it says. It may be that it is recognized, but needs to be mounted in the filesystem. We can help with that.

On the camera -- well, depends on what you're looking to do. Does it have a memory card in it? What kind? A lot of folks use Digikam for photo management, which is OK if it happens to recognize your camera. Personally, because my camera wasn't recognized when I got it (it is now), I bought a cheap USB SD card reader, and I just remove the memory card, stick it in the card reader, and manually (using Dolphin) copy off my photos to a directory named something like /media/images/general_photos/2008-10-10. Then I use Gwenview to review them, and gimp to change them if needed.

baldsue, was it a wubi install you upgraded?

              Re: usb devices?

dibl: I have a different hard drive in my computer right now, one with 8.04 on it, so I haven't yet tried lsusb. I remember having to use that command to set something up...maybe my mp3 player on 8.04. Will swap out hard drives back to 8.10 this morning and give you the listing of what it says. I did manage to get my usb hard drive working on 8.10, so I'm assuming maybe both my mp3 and camera have the same problem my mp3 had in 8.04. I'm willing to explore fixing that...

toad: No, I wasn't using wubi. I want to live MS-free.

thanks for your willingness to help!

                Re: usb devices?

                lsusb results:

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 04a9:315e Canon, Inc.
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c404 Logitech, Inc. TrackMan Wheel
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The first one is for my camera.

I'm going to see if I can find the instructions I used to enable my mp3 player and see if I can get them to work for my Canon camera. And while I'm at it, I'll make sure my mp3 player will also work.

But if you have suggestions in the meantime, I'd appreciate them.

                  Re: usb devices?

OK, that lsusb output shows that the camera is recognized as a USB device.

However, that doesn't mean Digikam or any other package has the correct driver for it. My Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX is recognized (when it's plugged in) but Camorama won't run it any more, for some reason.

Anyway, plug in your camera and run Digikam and see what happens -- there's nothing to lose. If Digikam isn't installed, just
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install digikam-kde4
                  to install it on 8.10.

                    Re: usb devices?

                    Solved!!!

                    DigiKam did recognize it.

I usually just pulled the images off the camera using Dolphin but I can use DigiKam, if that's what it takes.

                    Thank You
