How do I get my icons back?

Here's an idiotic question, hopefully there is an answer! In Kubuntu 8.1 I deleted all my desktop icons in one go by clicking on the little "delete" box. Don't ask me why.
I've looked everywhere I can think of but can see no way of getting them back except by doing it manually one-by-one from the desktop file.
Ther must be a way - is there a command I can run?

Hm, guess is you clicked on "move to trash" - if so go with the mouse to the trash can, open it, select all your icons, right click and select restore.

    It works in 8.04...

Well it wasn't like that. I was running the new KDE 4 that comes with the Kubuntu 8.10 installation. The whole set of desktop icons seems to have a little task bar of it's own that appears when you roll the mouse around nearby. On that little task bar is a little box with a cross in it and I clicked on that. I will now go and check the trash can and report back - it's something I forgot to do!

There is nothing in the trash can, so I'm stuck. What is it (during boot) that installs the desktop icons? That should surely still be running.

It sounds like you need to ->Add Widgets ->System Tray.

            Try this

Open your home directory in dolphin/konqueror etc and select "view hidden files". Then open .kde/share**** and rename the folder to config-old. Then log out of kde altogether and log back in. You will have a pristine kde4 setup complete with your desktop icons.

If you have any apps running from the kde suite, (kmail/Kotact Korganiser etc) you will find the data files in .kde/share/config-old kresourses. Copy that folder to the new .kde/share/config folder.

Do not delete the old folder until you are certain that everything is up and running.

It may be that there is a single file within the folder that you could simply rename and delete but I didn't want to mess around too much so I did it that way.

****PS - just spotted an error, the file to rename is .kde/share/config and not .kde/share

Ian - thank you for that - it worked fine. There's more to KDE4 than meets the eye! I'd better read the manual.
