widget transparency?

is there a way of enabling transparency for superkaramba widgets?

following the superkaramba faq did work until a plasma crash, which prompted the widgets' background to follow the plasma theme's colours/opacity. restarting plasma, reinstalling, disabling, enabling the widgets had no result.
when run in superkaramba, the widgets retain transparency, yet the font rendering is absolutely horrid.
