    FireFox 3 Behaving Strangely?

This started when I upgraded to the 2.6.27-1 kernel, and continues on the -2 kernel:

Upon starting FireFox, it opens correctly, then immediately freezes and turns gray. It is unresponsive for several minutes, and then comes back momentarily. At the first click on a tab or anything, it freezes again. After a couple of minutes it comes back and is perfectly usable.

However, it randomly spawns small, empty windows. If you close one of them, FireFox will close with no warnings or intermediate messages. If you leave them, FireFox continues to work normally, although your screen becomes very cluttered with the spawned windows.

Anyone else seeing these things? I'm guessing it is a consequence of running compiz -- I may disable compiz and see how things go.

I don't think it is compiz. I think it is the flash plugin. I'm not having the same problem you are exactly, but I am getting occasional sudden closings of firefox when I try to open some sites. It just closes. And fast. The moment I click on the site. The screen turning grey indicates you are using 100% of CPU capacity. Next time it happens, see if you can open a terminal in another workspace and run "top" at the prompt and see if some process is eating up your CPU resources.

I think I was right -- I think it was compiz. top did not show anything extraordinary in CPU usage, at the time FF3 was frozen. I fumbled my way through disabling compiz and enabling Kwin -- first you have change the window manager in System Settings > Advanced > Session Manager > Window Manager, then after a restart you have to run
      Code:
      kwin --replace
in a console window. Then you're back to a single desktop, so you have to go in to System Settings > Desktop > Multiple Desktops and give yourself back a few more.

Anyway, with Kwin running correctly, I had the problem reported by Rog131, with a 40% CPU usage by Kwin and xorg. It turns out the fix for that is to go in to System Settings > Desktop > Advanced and un-check the "Use Vsync" box. Thanks to kjjjjshab for figuring that out.

I had got a reasonably stable system and so I enabled Compiz and I then found that the keyboard was disabled and the minimise/maximise buttons disappeared. I was unable to do anything except start over.

If you add Firefox to the panel the icon is wrong and on clicking it runs Kate instead of Firefox. This I can't really understand surely somebody must have tested Firefox before Alpha 4?

Just to help with the troubleshooting, I am running Ubuntu Intrepid on another partition, and Firefox seems to be behaving normally there. I had some other problems with getting the correct nvidia driver loaded, but no problems with Firefox.

I'm going to back off and say it seems to be better in Kwin, but it wasn't entirely a compiz-related problem. I was away from the computer for awhile, and upon returning I launched FF3 and there was a freeze of a half-minute or so before I could use it. It didn't turn gray, and it hasn't spawned a bunch of empty windows yet, so I dunno -- whatever the problem is, it's not as bad running Kwin as it was with compiz.
