    aptitude isnt installed

    Hello together,

    yesterday i installed alpha4. Now i have a little question: Why is aptitude not installed on default? Of course you can install it, but is there any matter for this decision (no aptitude on default)?

    Thanks for your answer.

    Why is aptitude not installed on default?

    The Facts

    The aptitude has been part of the ubuntu-minimal metapackage.

    Package: ubuntu-minimal
    Minimal core of Ubuntu

    This package depends on all of the packages in the Ubuntu minimal system, that is a functional command-line system with the following capabilities:

    - Boot
    - Detect hardware
    - Connect to a network
    - Install packages
    - Perform basic diagnostics

    It is also used to help ensure proper upgrades, so it is recommended that it not be removed.
    ubuntu-minimal changelog tells:
    ubuntu-meta (1.107) intrepid; urgency=low

    * Refreshed dependencies
    * Added inputattach to desktop
    * Added pciutils to standard
    * Added pcmciautils to desktop
    * Added usbutils to standard
    * Removed aptitude from minimal
    * Removed gettext-base from minimal
    * Removed inputattach from standard
    * Removed libfribidi0 from minimal
    * Removed pciutils from minimal
    * Removed pcmciautils from minimal
    * Removed tcpd from minimal
    * Removed usbutils from minimal
    * Removed util-linux-locales from minimal

    The Fiction

    The package maintainer is thinking (i don't know but i guess):

    The package ubuntu-minimal is the bare essential ubuntu. / It should be as small and compact as possible. / It should only have one package manager /... / Removing aptitude.

        Maybe they just forgot to integrate it, after ubuntu removed it from the Metapackage?

          I downloaded Adept 3.0 beta 1 but I prefer the old version. I have started using Synaptic instead.

            A blank CD has the same capacity today as 5 years ago. But Hardy Heron (and now Intrepid Ibex) are including new features and capabilities, all added to the same Live CD. You only require one "capability to install packages" -- with that one capability, you can apt-get the other methods. My two cents' worth.
