adept manager falies with Ibex Alpha 4

Remvoing /var/tmp/kdecache-david got around the gui stopping for the package manager, now I get a empty window coming up.

I guess there a not of packages to install anyway. I was hoping to install emacs, but trying to do so form the command line resulted in no such package being found

    david@lgr:~$ sudo adept_manager
    kapture::PkgSystem::PkgSystem()

Why don't you install Synaptic Package Managerł

    sudo install synaptic

Then, go to System > Synaptic.
Then click on Reload, then on Update, then on Apply and there you go.

    Better than Adept.

The adept problem has been around since the beta's of intrepid! as for
      Better than Adept.
Thats very subjective! I'm using Synaptic but much prefer Adept. I installed adept 3 to have a look but it's very empty at the moment & they have gone way too much like Synaptic in functionality

Adept, which is a QT3/KDE3 app is definitely borked in Intrepid, and while there is a very alpha version of Adept3 for KDE4, it is not really usefull enough for most, other than to test. Definitely missing a lot of things at the moment.

Synaptic is installable, but in Itrepid/kde4, it has some minor issues for me, such as the gui freezing after installing packages (can't tell if the package installation completed or not) and I have to kill it.

So I stick mostly wth the cli at the moment, which I have been doing with all my alpha testing over the past releases. You can use the command
        Code:
        apt-cache search "foo"
to search for packages that way as well as using http://packages.ubuntu.com until either adept or synaptic are more stable/useful.

Oh, yeah, I don't recommend kpackage at all, it was kinda crap back in the day (though on an rpm based system) and still seems to be that way. But of course ymmv

There are lot of package managers / apt frontends > FAQ: Package Managers

One of them (aptitude) started in the konsole:
          Code:
          sudo aptitude
          Attached Files
