    howto use kde3 in intrepid?

Well as i have understood kdebase package vill point to the kde4 version so what vill be the best sullotion to keep kde3 desktop (read kicker primarely)?

3dparty kde3 repos? or will ther be bad conflicts to other packages?

Or should i just copy my existing kde3 installed stuff to a new subdir and call upon them instead of the kde4 normal instaltion?

Why not just stick with Hardy if you need KDE3?

It's probably a lot easier to compile new software/kernels and make them work in Hardy than it is to replace KDE4 (which other pieces of Kubuntu 8.10 might make assumptions about and expect for correct operation).
Specs:  Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (@3Ghz), G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066, ASUS Striker II Formula MB, Asus EN9800GTX+ Dark Knight, ABS Tagan BZ800 PS, Antec 900 Case.

It’s hard, but not impossible (i think )

        KDE3 and Intrepid Ibex

Plan #9; Mixing Hardy and Intrepid repositories

With the alternate CD you can install a command line system, that is (Ku)buntu without a graphical desktop.

Change repositories to the Hardy and install kubuntu-desktop or kde-core or something else...

You need to pin the KDE packages to the version 3.5.9 > Pinning version

Change back to the Intrepid repositories and live happily ever after...

        NOTE #1

It is possible to mix repositories; Mixing Ubuntu and Debian repositories > In the meanwhile - Upgrading KDE 4.1 Alpha to the KDE 4.1 Beta 1 . Mixing Ubuntu and Debian repositories is Not Recommended.

        NOTE 2

I have not tested this ! It could work but "The Devil Is In The Details". + you need to do lot of work to maintain your mixed system.

well then i will have to stick whit it 4 several years onwords.. and that dossent sound alltogetter funny..

and gnome is as uggly kde4.. windows wista yea i dont like how windows systems are built and working behind the seams.. but purly desktop like it could have bean an chose if not 4 the underlying diffucuktyes and having to look 4 serials and stuff all the time..

so what il probly try is not doing a dist uppgrad and adding intrepid repos and only uppgrading the parts i want to uppgrade.. eg all but kde realted packages.. if it dosent work then il have to change distro complely..

probaly il just mix hardy and intrepid and do no dist uppgrade.. if that dosent work then il change distro as well cause then i would have to do a clean install.. and that i somthing a dread as i have tons of tweks and special art and compiled software all mixed upp..

Why? Why is it appealing to shim KDE3 in place of KDE4 on Intrepid (where they use the same directory names, so co-existance isn't an easy proposition), yet using Hardy which allows you to install both KDE3 and KDE4 into separate directories "you're stuck with it"?

With Hardy you can use both, then just dist-upgrade the entire system when you decide 4's good enough for you.

                  shim?

i dont realy nead kde4, i only have cause its app aplication that i might somtime use:P i have tons and tons of apsp that i dont realy use.. so i can yeasely diss kde4..

and kde4 wont be mature in several years if ever! if one is to belive what the developers are saying.. cause i have i the best loking linux desktop that i can get next of windows whit windows blinds..

and truth 2 tell kde4 dosent give me anything usefull.. i dont ever use my "desktop" or desktop widgets as i run all windows maximized

so the prospect is then to use hardy for several years onword.. not a very plesing idea to miss updated applications in genral.. i always compile apsp to get the latest funcktions ans so.. but not my taskbar and windows...

According to the Kubuntu devs I spoke with, there will be no 3.5.x packages for the Ibex, so sticking with hardy is the only way to go, unless some, er, ahem, intrepid soul creates their own packages somewhere, or via a PPA repository, but that would be such a massive undertaking I don't think it could be done very well or very easily.

Well i have allrady started on creating a ppa.. thay cant be worse than keping a mixed repo.. cause sticking whit hardy isint a alternative and niether is kde4 soo..

na so big isint it just around 10 modules ore so from svn.. but if their ganna be working 4 someone other i dunno but im following the ubutu packing guide to some exentent:P

I think it is much more than just the packages (those 10 modules are rather huge btw), you also probably will need all the QT libraries, etc, and also keep kde3 separate from KDE4 so you don't hose both

                        Good luck!

If you are going to the trouble you might want to name the kd3 apps with kd3 in the name like they did with kde4 in Hardy!

Just to play Devil's advocate: Wouldn't it be better for the evolution of KDE4/Intrepid if no one created such packages - i.e. Intrepid users *had* to use KDE4 (and therefore uncover and report more bugs, faster)?

I don't think that "must" or "had to" are part of the open source (or the Linux) vocabulary and i hope that they are not part of the Kubuntu.
