    Hi,

I can't get the WiFi working on my new Medion Akoyama MD 96970 notebook. (Ofcourse I already spent some time googling and checking in some tutorials, etc.)

When I try to set WiFi settings with iwconfig i get strange messages like this:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Resource temporarily unavailable.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 power on
Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Input/output error.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off
Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Input/output error.

Under the proprietary OS also installed on the computer everything works fine.

A possible source for the problem is, that the card might not be active in Linux. In Windows, the card only starts being active, if I activate it by a key combination (function key + F7). This does not work in Kubuntu.

Also, I checked whether I can just boot it switched on by changing the BIOS, but I cannot.

Can someone please help me to get this beast working?

    Thanks in Advance,

    bassetfrog

I have a Sony Vaio that has the same wireless and it works fine. I suspect you are a victim of software problems. There are way too many things trying to control the network. Mu suggestion is
    sudo aptitude install wicd
to install wicd, a network controller that really works. This will uninstall network-manager in all its forms. Make sure that the only interface defined in /etc/network/interfaces is lo.

Start wicd and configure. I will warn you that when you see the essid in wicd you will want to click it for further options for that interface.

For me it just goes there. I think all I did was start it once and set it up and now it shows up. There might be a difference between Intrepid and Jaunty in this regard. Or maybe it is because I have the systray widget added to my panel.
