    strange wireless problem

I was recently at a coffee shop in town that offers free wifi. I had two laptops with me, one brand new HP pavilion dv7 running Kubuntu 8.1 and the other a mac powerbook g4 running Kubuntu gutsy. I also have a nokia n810. While there neither laptop could detect a wireless network! My n810 detected and connected with no problem. I could not even manually configure a network connection. Any ideas why this would be?

I am at my house right now using my wireless network on the HP with no issues.
I tried Enlightenment once, it was pretty cool.

If you are using Knetworkmanager, it should see any nearby broadcast. I have several neighbors whose wifi shows up on my machine. I don't tap the free goodness that some of them offer!!
