asking for help in working with proxies

ok, while i'm a lot more comfortable working with Kubuntu now, i've wanted to start using proxies.
is there a program i can run that will switch between proxies automatically (don't really care if it's every few minutes or some other factor) from a list or do i have to manually switch proxies?
also, where do i go to setup to use a proxy and how can i tell if it's working correctly?

lastly, i'm running Windows XP in VirtualBox... will my proxy settings set in Kubuntu apply to my Internet browsing through WinXP or will i need to do something in WinXP as well?

thank you in advance for your replies.

No, your proxy settings in KUbuntu will not be applied to the VirtualBox instances. You have to manually configure the browser in the VBox session.
