    kubuntu is very slow

    Hi
I'm a newbie in this. I have a problem with my connection with kubuntu. since I install the kubuntu, all my connection is extremely slow. To open apps(firefox, ktorrent, and even open Kmenu) takes more than 5min. I trought it was my video card, so I change it from openGL to Xanter. It stop doing the mosiac but for still slow. Now is when I Transfers files between computers (1winxp, 1macos, 1kubuntu) very slow, I thought is my RAM so I add 1 gig (now i'm 2 gig) still samething, I reinstall the Kubuntu, samething. I change my HD(from 40 to 80gig) still nothing change. Can someone help to figure it out what is happening

PS: it is not my ISP because the other computers (winxp and MAC) works fine very good speed, and I'm in the Extreme High speed, and my computer is a P4 2.6GHz.

Try Memtest (you'll find an option in GRUB).
It takes a lot of time, so be patient.
It will check your RAM for bad sectors and "repair" it to use only the good sectors.

Before going any further, do you have this same problem running off the LiveCD?

It might help to disable IPv6 in Firefox and/or Konqueror -- a Forum search or Google will give you lots of hits.

                  Re: kubuntu is very slow

Well, for now it's guessing whether hardware or software will be the problem...

Did you check your processes on freaking out?
                  In konsole:
                  Code:
                  top
You may also press CTRL+ESC for a graphical interface.

Further more: are any other components, like your hard disk, working very hard? If hardware is defective, it might call many times a second on e.g. the hard disk, which will make your computer slower than a snail.
                  If so:
                  - could anyone tell how to measure interrupt requests?
                  - you may try to achieve immediate success by removing e.g. a video card (hope you also have one in your motherboard) or audio card. Remove as many cards as possible and see if it works faster. If so, then place the cards back one by one. Don't forget to turn off power when you change your configuration.

ok that good. you mention video card. I know I'm using the internal video card. I try to change my video card for a ati one, my monitor is telling me that he is out of range, my model of my monitor is not listed (sony M81). again i'm stuck. MAN! this is hard!! >

                      Re: kubuntu is very slow

digichikmon, could you tell us first if there are any busy processes and whether any device is working unusually hard?

It is not sure that any hardware is failing, so replacing devices at this point is not very useful. We should first identify the process, setting or device that is causing the slowdown, after that we'll discuss how to fix the problem, OK?

And... don't despair, most issues get fixed

                        Re: kubuntu is very slow

ok, I did to a memtest on the machine, and all my ram have no error. After that I when to the system/ system option/ desktop and change from openGL to Xanter. I check under memory, it seem that in the physical memory is using between 66% to 70% of the apps and the 27% of disk cache. on the total physical it at 10% and 10% on space. that the part is does make sense!! if it is my hard drive, it can be possible is a 80g and on the info it said is at 20% in used. Does a external HD could consume memory? I have a ext HD of 500g and is running a 30%.

                              Re: kubuntu is very slow

I see that you're running bittorrent at the same time. Do you have torrents uploading? Your perceived network performance with, say, firefox, is affected by the network activity of your other processes.

Specially with ADSL connections, which don't have symmetric bandwidth, it is easy to saturate the upstream bandwidth with torrent activity. The net effect is that firefox can take a long time to request something to a server. This is very easy to test, just open the system monitor and check the network upstream bandwidth. If it is close to 80% of your upstream bandwidth without opening firefox you have found the solution for your problem. Simply go to your torrent software and limit the maximum upstream bandwidth that it can use.
